I'm 34 and have gotten my marathon from 3:00 to 2:42 in two years. I've been hovering around 170lb that whole time. I've heard about studies that show you can gain speed by dropping fat weight. I know that 170 isn't the ideal running weight, so if I lost say 10lb, is it likely that I'd see 10-15s per km improvement, as long as I'm losing the weight in a healthy way, burning just fat and not muscle? My idea would be to be in a slight caloric deficit while lifting in the gym and taking in enough protein, while continuing my same run training.
I'm also wondering how big an impact this would have on marathon pace vs 5k pace.
