You don’t need to idolize him to know he had the sort of mental tightness and tenacity which would have rendered you unworthy of carrying his jockstrap.

what jockstrap?
Fact is, guy who wins the USA college champs a few times, and his fans think he's a world beater, goes to the world champs and LOSES
... doesn't want to crawl back and say well, at least I can still win the national college champs.
If he wasn't dead, from his own drunk driving, he'd blame the dozens of fans who got him thinking he was a world beater. He was just some ignorant kid from Coos Bay and you told him he'd be a superhero

I don’t idolize Prefontaine. But you are a coward for disparaging a dead man. He was twice theman you could ever be.

An angry little dunk man that runs fast is nothing to get excited about and not twice the man by any standard, whatever that means. Most normal people have no clue who Pre was and rightfully don't give a shyte about some drunk who got shytefaced and drove his vehicle through a residential neighborhood and into a rock at high speed. Had he killed someone else instead of, or in addition to himself, he would be seen as a reckless criminal, with the difference not being his actions, but merely a degree of blind luck. I guarantee there would be no "Pre Classic if he ran over a toddler or 2. His ACTIONS are more consistent with him being a mere fraction of the homeless man who lives under a bridge in a cardboard box, but is smart enough to know not to get into a car and drive when they are wasted. The only people that idolize Pre are a bunch of runner fembois who think that Stop Pre and other idiotic slogans make them part of the "in crowd." There is no logic to the idolization of Pre. #teamrock

But you are just bitter and jealous. And a sad little man.

I managed to not bin my car into a rock, thus rendering myself deceased, before reaching the age of 25, I'm quite certain I am not jealous of someone that was unable to accomplish the same. The guy had a .16 BAC and was still walking and talking like he was sober when he left the party, that tells you exactly what their tolerance level was from excessive EtOH intake. References to Pre should be one of a cautionary tale rather than the illogical deification that currently exists.
Even his Wikipedia page is a whitewashed version of the truth.
"He was killed in an automobile crash near his residence in Eugene, Oregon at the age of 24."
He wasn't killed in an automobile crash, he killed himself by crashing his automobile. There is only 1 line at the very end that mentions the fact that he had a .16 BAC. It says "His blood alcohol content was found by the Eugene Police Department to be 0.16%. The official cause of his death was traumatic asphyxiation. No other injuries contributed to his death."
No other injuries contributed to his death, however, there were certainly other factors that did, one being that he was shytefaced, crashed into a rock, flipped has car on himself and was pinned/entrapped/crushed until he stopped breathing.
