Comparing Japanese spectators in Japanese marathons with Spanish spectators in Spanish marathons it's night and day with Japanese spectators being highly involved and very knowledgeable but Spanish spectators basically being random and incidental. I remember watching the world half marathon championships in Poland a few years ago and there were basically no spectators involved - total lack of interest.

The fact that bekele can still stick a 29' ten k on the road, in a marathon, at age 42, kind of blows my mind. Doubt he'll figure in the finish but kudos from one old fella to another
