Disturbing. Thank you for posting this.
Paywall so view source to read. And yes, disturbing.
Yeah, these stories are pretty disturbing. But to say that it's not safe for any athlete is a bit of a stretch. All of them were domestic violence cases, which, again, are terrible and extremely violent but I have spent a lot of time here and it's a safe place for athletes to train. Really.
The quote is in the context of women. It doesn't seem safe for local women. Even Vivian Cheruiyot doesn't have control over the petrol stations she bought with her own money because her husband seized control. It doesn't seem safe if the police don't take your calls seriously and a large part of society thinks your male boyfriend, coach or husband has right to do as he pleases.
I tried to gift the article but maybe for the Athletic articles in the Times you can't do that.
This is another disturbing part:
“The problem came during massages,” she says. “He told her that sex is part of the massage, and because she was just an innocent little girl, she thought that if the boss said it was normal, it was normal. He was the one who sent money and sugar home. Within a year, she got pregnant, at the age of just 14 or 15.”
“So many girls are sexually violated because they go for a massage before a race and say they have 300 shillings (a few dollars or pounds),” says Lagat. “Then they are told, ‘No, it is 500′ — but if you’re preparing for a race and this is your shot, you can avoid the extra 200 if you do something else.”
Every day we have posters here screaming, "We should not be giving scholarships to African runners!"
Well, if this is the situation in Kenya, then maybe we should be welcoming them here to save them from potential danger. Maybe this is why so many seek out opportunities to run college in America; it is an escape to a safer place.
There were two different male runners murdered in the last year or so, one had his throat slit, and the other was hacked to.death. Not to mention the coincidence of the next Kenyan superster Kiptum losing control of his car and dying.
But yeah, it's completely safe for male runners.
When will New York Times get to the root cause of mass shootings, especially school shootings in America ?
Domestic violence is so rife in America that when a woman is murdered, the first police suspect is the spouse.

Yes, that is what my Kenyan girlfriend tells me but I do not think that Kenya will be safe until professional athletes start to feel that it is worthwhile to bring an entourage there to secure a wife. Admit it they top American women by triplefold!
