The big dogs don't care about regionals-they run to qualify, slick. BYU's average age for their top 5 is probably 4-5 years older than the rest of the field. Do with that what you will. Nationals is what counts and if your team has to race out of their mind just to qualify, well then the big dance does not bode well for you. Words to live by homes.
“We’re going to treat this like a preliminary heat and rest a few guys,” says BYU men’s coach Ed Eyestone. “Hopefully, we’ll place in the top three or four.”
Can someone look into/verify this? I feel like you're just pulling this "4-5 year" BS out of your backside. That would mean if BYU's average top 5 age was 23, the overwhelming majority of the field would be 18.

Clinger is 26 so start there
Casey Clinger, SR - 26 Aidan Troutner, SR - 25
Lucas Bons, SR - 24 Joey Nokes, SR - 23 Davin Thompson, JR - 21 Creed Thompson, SR - 21 James Corrigan, SO - 22
Average age: 23.14
Since some people’s birthdays are earlier in the year and some are recent, let’s assume that everyone has 6 months until their next birthday meaning that the average age would be bumped up to 23.64.
It’s crazy that they’re 4-5 years older than the average of every other team, since that would mean every other team’s average age is 18.64-19.64 (this is sarcasm for you BYU haters that constantly fail to understand reason). My guess is that the average age of BYU’s top 7 is less than 2 years older than other top programs. And where did those 2 years come from? Oh maybe from the 2 years of mission service where they didn’t train.
5 of their top 7 will no longer have XC eligibility. This is their last year. Plus James Corrigan will probably go pro since he’s an Olympian. So just one returner for next year and something tells me that they’ll still be a podium team next year…

This is what I thought would likely be found. Propagation of a false narrative is rampant here- powered by poor education, disingenuity, and just plain bias. New flash: your opinion is not automatically fact.

Crazy that you care so much about BYU and their age that you made it your username.
There was a post last year about NAU's average age, which was ~22.5. BYU is on average one year older than NAU's team last year, none of whom took off two entire years for running. Who do you think has the advantage?
And then the big follow-up question - why are the BYU women so good if they don't go on missions?
BYU's top five averages 24 years old. That's about three years older than your typical NCAA team, two years beyond the typical 22 year old college senior. That age counts.
As for BYU's women, they do have one of the best coaches in the country. In fact, for both teams, they have a huge reservoir of talent in the Utah and mountain west xc pipeline, so they do have an outstanding recruiting pool, largely of mormons more or less bound to go there.

BYU’s top 5 for men averages over 24. That’s very high.
They also train at a decent elevation, close to 5000’.
They also have a great coach (especially on the women’s side, one of the best in all of NCAA.)
That being said, they are within NCAA regulations so I don’t understand this constant whining about their age. Don’t hate the player, hate the game.

Who are you counting as their top 5? I assume it will be the four XC All-Americans from previous years, Casey Clinger 26, James Corrigan 22, Davin Thompson 21, Creed Thompson 21. Their fifth will likely be Joey Nokes 23. Average age right there is 22.6. Aidan Troutner 25 hasn’t historically raced well at Nationals and Lucas Bons’s (age 25) best finish is in the 60’s.
How about instead of assuming their “average age for top 5 is over 24” you pull up their birthdays and actually do some math. They’re not that much older than the other top programs in the country.

Wtf? Why are you making random numbers up? Average age of top 5 is 22. What’s with this place?
