I keep reading “roster cuts are coming!!” And yet teams that are already over said roster limits are signing 6-10 HS Kids for next fall. How does this work?? Why are coaches recruiting that many HS kids if they already have 30 people on their roster? maybe 4-6 graduate but that still leaves a lot of cuts to be made. Are coaches hoping the limits will not be put into place?
Cuts happen mid-late season. Overfill the roster, throw some eggs at the wall, whatever doesn’t break and whoever is good you keep and then cut the rest

In my made up world there would be a cut window. Coaches can only make cuts after the second year. Everyone gets two years, and then if they keep you you get two more, guaranteed.

Yes but that still means at some point there will be more than the roster limit. If there are cuts after XC then another 10 freshmen join the team over the summer for the new XC season next fall there will again be 30 kids on the team.

Where are you seeing this - I have not seen any big classes this cycle besides maybe Colorado and 5 or so at UNC. I think you are grossly exaggerating. most are adding 4 kids max right now

Exactly, and the cycle continues and more will be cut again. This is a business. Their job is to win not satisfy your participation. It sucks but welcome to the real world.

I agree with you! I am not complaining about it, I was more asking why hasn’t it happened already. Because there are teams currently with 28-32 on their current rosters. Everyone is talking about roster caps and roster cuts and yet it doesn’t seem to be happening. But as you said I guess we will wait and see what the end of XS brings.
Why would it matter how many are on “roster” when so many don't race anyway? In other words, can you have 30 training if 13 are redshirting for any number of reasons?

Grossly exaggerating? You just named two teams adding more than 4. BYU women picked up 6 (so far) OSU added 6 women, NC state 6 women. I didn’t say everyone. I asked why are coaches recruiting 6-10 kids when their rosters currently sit at or near 30. Especially on women’s teams that seem to be very large right now. You are right I haven’t seen any with 10 recruits added but I think 6+ is high especially with all the doom and gloom about caps and cuts. The coaches do not seem to be stressed about it though so I guess the rest of us will just wait and see what happens.

where are you getting your numbers from? From what is public in the class of 2025 recruits thread NC State has 5, BYU has 4 and OK State has 4 on the womens side

BYU has 6 unless a couple are no longer committed. Not sure why we are seeing a bunch of signings reported today.
BYU’s women is an interesting example. Close to 30 for now, sure, but probably 7 or so are straight mid distance girls who are rostered with XC more for the experience than an expectation of contributing. Going forward there won’t be XC spots for 800 kids.
After some graduate that still leaves a lot of cuts, but not as many. Still a head scratcher for those on the outside looking in.

That thread doesn’t have all commits listed-not even close. I follow different coaches on IG and was surprised they shared commitments the last few days that no one had mentioned before.
For example that thread has 4 recruits listed but:
Boston Bybee (lone peak) signed with BYU today not listed on the thread.
Anne Elise Packard (Jserra) posted on her IG over the weekend she committed to BYU not listed in the thread.
These things aren’t hard to find if you follow coaches and have instagram.
Good in depth threads on this already. Roster cuts are coming with the changes in finances for sports that just fulfill the mission of a university, rather than providing entertainment. Also capitalizing a WORD doesn't make it MORE CORRECT.

my apologies for capitalizing:
byu
ok state
nc state
xc
hs
i promise to use all lowercase moving forward. thank you for the lesson.

BYU a good one to watch. They will either roster extra xc on track, or really beef up the quality of their club team.
Remember BYU is the one school where kids would rather stay and run club than transfer out.
For all teams - this settlement is not signed and has still plenty of 'issues' that could further delay it. Some schools may just be waiting for approval.

fair enough. I pretty much just follow some top programs i'm interested in and that josh grenade guy so unless he makes their commitment graphic or they tag one of the few schools i follow then i'm out of the loop. Who is NC State's 6th going to be?
