Cross Country is the one of the only sports that people don't automatically know what it is from the name. The name doesn't actually say what it is. When you say "basketball" people know you are playing basketball.
I don't have a new name picked out but something like "running" would be good. Competitive running? Distance running?

I like what you are doing but keep coming back to "cross country" being pretty decent maybe add the word running?
Personally, I prefer painful miserable cold distortion of an otherwise great sport. But not catchy.
Running that's (mostly) not on a track or road. Catchy, but might be hard to fit on your letter jacket.

Soccer, hockey, lacrosse, tennis, golf... all super descriptive. Football and baseball are misleading. Your premise sucks.

I think the official name is already "Cross Country Running" --- how is that not descriptive enough for you?
You sound like the person who wants us to refer to Americans as "United States of Americans" because just saying "Americans" technically includes all people from both North and South America.
Could be Grass Track. Places like California don’t even run on grass though. Maybe just Off Track. Could also be known as short track, but indoor wants to use that. Off Track, final answer.

Put basketball baskets at intervals along the course and have the runners shoot some hoops. Long distance grass basketball.
