Looking for a Non-Smart Fitness Watch

Without GPS or HR (because basically every HR-tracking watch allows data to be transmitted via Bluetooth or ANT+ to other devices), you're looking at a pedometer at this point - to track steps. I think even the G-Shock watches with step counting and HR tracking are Bluetooth enabled with App connectivity now, so you're looking at something like a Timex Ironman (so back to the 90s indeed).

I'd find a less controlling job. No amount of money in the world would let me give up that level of autonomy.

Eh, these are not unusual conditions for government jobs or contractor jobs where security clearance is required (i.e. DoD, etc.). Most people can leave their watches, phones in their car when they are on site in an office for the day, but if it's a deployment or something obviously that's not possible.

Can't you just get any watch you want and leave it in your car or at home while you're at work?

Not if your job involves being in a military tank. Or to smuggle goods across a border. Or both.

Timex Ironman Transit+ appears to have HR (you have to actively take it by pressing, it isn't measured constantly), and pedometer, and obviously timekeeping.

The only good thing about the end of a running career ( half a century) is that I don’t need a watch that’s best for running anymore.

That new apple10 is fun. The fitness app and rings and calorie counter, still gives splits too ( as one of the rings)

It’s a blast. Only bad thing is occasionally for some reason the screen flips on its own… but you don’t need the running/walking part on!

To this day I use a Timex Ironman. I can't imagine wanting a GPS watch, but I also don't feel the need to have HR data, so it's an obvious choice. It's so good at what it does that I struggle to believe it when other people find it noteworthy.

If I needed HR data beyond "my breathing sounds hard" I would look into buying a separate heart rate monitor, like one of the ones with a chest strap, but maybe you want to avoid doing that.

Buy Garmin and turn off the GPS function. Use it as a stopwatch.

Personally, a mechanical chronograph would be your best bet.

If you can afford it, get a Casio STR300C-1V.

This is my workhorse. The last one I bought in 2021 was just $22 with shipping, now it looks like it's a lot more expensive.

I've been using HRMs for nearly 30 years.

You can buy and older Timex Ironman HRM with a chest strap for about $40 on eBay. They are not compatible with bluetooth so you should have no problems with them.

I tried 5 different wrist HRMs a couple of years ago. Not a single one of them provided consistently accurate HR when running. I'm sure of this because I wore the wrist HRM and the Timex HRM with a chest strap so I could compare HR readings in real time.
