skip to 9:20 ish where he states that he wrote down that he wanted to win the 1500/5k double at the Paris Olympics.
Obviously failed to qualify for the 5k but you gotta love that he sets these lofty goals that absolutely no one believes he can do. This is the mindset of a gold medalist. The US is lucky to have a gifted and driven athlete like Cole Hocker!
He got smoked at the OT, in a race won in 13:09, and finished with a 2:36. In the Olympics, it would probably have to be as slow as 13:40, for him to have a chance.
All those rounds definitely cooked him at the end of the trials. Hell that 5k prelim for Hocker was hard running 13:23. Compare it to the Olympics where no one broke 14 in the first round I believe.
Makes me wonder, Is the US the only Olympic trials that makes them do a prelim 5k? I don’t think british trials do rounds for a 5k or 3 rounds for the 1500m like the US Olympics trials does. Next year it will be back to the standard 2 round for 1500m and a straight final for the 5k I believe.
But this doesn’t surprise me that Hocker sets high goals like this. We saw that insane double that he did at ncaa indoor winning the mile/3k double. He’s striving for Hicham El Guerrouj level greatness.

Here we go again. Results are results, and there is no way to quantify the effect, if any, of having competing in the 1500m. Ingebrigtsen certainly has no problem with the 1500/5000m double.
As for high goals, Ingebrigtsen was been mocked on LR for claiming he could set WRs for every distance through to the marathon.
So Hocker wanted two golds instead of one and this is supposed to show ambition or something? Dude wasn't even in the race as far as I recall.
I literally want every gold medal from the Olympics. Not just in T&F. Every sport. And after that I want all the gold on Earth. Once Elon gets us to Mars, any gold mined there should be mine as well.
He's only run 12:58 but has run 8:05i for 2 mile. I think he'd be VERY dangerous in a 13:10-13:20 championship 5k final

Correct. You need to be a legit distance runner to medal in the 5k at Olympics/Worlds. Guys like Hocker and Kerr are different from Ingebrigtsen and Katir even though all four are elite 1500m athletes.
Makes me suspicious when 1500m guys suddenly think they can win 5000m Olympic gold.
Happend to Aouita in 84, and of course he was right, with his 'special methods'.
Hope Hocker isn't doing any 'special methods'.
I agree with a lot of what you’ve said over the years, but you Brits can’t contain your envy and jealousy when an American does well. It drives you up the wall, much the same as Jakob has sent Armstronglivs to the rubber-room.
Goals! But he only medaled cuz Jakob made massive error and left the inside lane open! I think jakob was delirious from going out too fast
easy to criticize jakob but when are you in the moment, you don't really think that much about it cuz you are trying to get to the finish line first. The last 100m is a blur with 70,000 fans screaming at you and there is a natural tendency to drift wide with a competitor trying to pass wide. Hocker actually drifted wide after he passes jakob if you look closely. He didn't stay in lane 1. Hocker was going to medal regardless if jakob opened up or not because jakob was fading.

The second heat of the first round was faster than you're remembering. Heat 1 was won by Nordas, 14:08. That might be what you're thinking of. But heat 2 was won by Ingebrigtsen, 13:51, and had 17 out of 19 guys break 14.
Also Cole ran 13:33 to win his heat at the trials, you're thinking of Woody Kincaid (13:23 in the other heat).
So comparing Cole's US Trials run to Jakob's Olympics, the difference was actually under 20 seconds.
