Some initial thoughts:
- The word "major" is becoming essentially meaningless. Marathon running looks deeply unserious compared to other professional sports.
- The TV broadcasts of several of the majors is laughably amateur. Again, not sure how diluting the product even further will enhance coverage.
- Elite fields in existing majors are already threadbare. There are not enough elites to provide decent competition in six majors, let alone seven or eventually nine!
- With Shanghai soon to be added as well (along with Cape Town), the series has been opened up to the world's dictatorships. Surely there are huge ethical issues given China's barbaric treatment of any athletes who speak out against the Communist regime. Marathons are supposed to be celebrations of all that is good about humanity.
- If any city deserved to be get the "major" designation, it was Paris and that 2024 Olympics course, or how about Athens, you know, the actual birthplace of marathon running.
