Whats the most improvement you have ever seen in a kid in 1 year I've heard of kids going 5:20 one season next with no training going nearly 4:40 usually that's just growing up but curious to what others have seen
I went from 5:23 and 2:21 at the end of track freshman year, mid 19:50s freshman cross, and 12:08 right before sophomore year to a 17:26, 10:30, 4:43, and 2:08 during sophomore year.
I think one of the crazier stories this HS season is Kyle Jakary from Jesuit CA. Looks like he was a JV runner last year and ran 18:00 5k the Clovis Invitation. Had an ok track season but nothing groundbreaking, 1:55/4:29. This year the kid ran 15:16 at the Clovis Inv and is #1 on one of CA's top teams.
I know a great kid who basically jogged 8:40 minute pace for his first 5km (27:10 or so) and then ran the next race at a more honest effort of 23:00. Then, over the course of the season he eventually broke 20 (barely).
He came back to this year and ran 19:30, 18:30, 17:30 in the first three meets. A year of maturity, training and coaching for a very talented yet undeveloped kid means he basically dropped 10 minutes in 13 months.

I had a teammate who ran 19 in his first XC race and opened the track season with a 5:05 mile. He won state in 4:18 that same season. Freak talent with a godly kick, but lazy.
Just was telling someone about the fun HS progression of one of the kids on our HS team recently.
5k XC / 3200 / 1600
Frosh - 24:15 / x / 6:18
Soph - 20:40 / 13:00 / 5:45
Jr - 19:30 / 11:30 / 5:09
Sr - 17:35 / 9:55 / 4:37
No offense but that isn’t particularly crazy, nor an extreme one year drop
I don't know if anyone has told you this, but most of what is posted on this message board is complete and utter bulls$%t. This is a very impressive progression that probably really happened.
I was a couple years younger than Woody Kincaid, and he had a pretty crazy progression back in high school. In 5k XC, his PRs were 18:05 as a sophomore, 16:18 as a junior and 15:05 as a senior. Only ran like 30-35 miles a week at the time, I guess in hindsight he was showing world class potential even back then
I knew two kids that didn't break 6 in the mile as freshmen and didn't break 5 in the Mile until their senior years. Both ended up not only breaking 5 in the Mile as seniors, but breaking 10 in the Two Mile as well.
