Said in the other thread… most deserving runner imo. Pushes the paces. As much as I am a fan of Cheptegei he clearly races to win/get a certain goal (WR) and doesn’t race as fearlessly as Yomif on the circuit.
When people say that he’s tuned up for longer distances and not the mile, I’d imagine he’d still be able to break 3:50 rn no? What about the full marathon and 10k? I think that we might see an attack on the 10k WR by the Ethiopians next year

The guy is a grinder. No doubt about it. Has all the talent in the world and often flops when it matters most.
I'm so happy it came together for him today. He deserves it.
Obviously hasn’t performed in world & championship finals but the Ethiopian Federation bears much of the blame. In Paris, he had to throw in surges over and over again to share the lead early. Of course that’s going to wear you out. But he’s always there at the bell 3k-half against the best of the best and that’s not small feat. I mean, the dude race the DL final < 2 months ago and broke the world record in the half in October. He’s a machine.

He's run 3:47 indoors...
I will not say this is irrelevant but it is over 5.5 years ago on a super fast indoor track, so it doesn’t speak much to what he can do now, and my guess is about 3:33 or so.

Can credit a few of the fastest 5000s ever to his pace pushing (Brussels 2018 and a bunch this and last year) as well as previous half WR attempts. Yes, like other posters noted he is inconsistent at the big stage, but Kejelcha is my all time range king — shoutout to Aouita, Choge, Farah, Geb
I’m glad Gidey’s WR remains and didn’t fall to someone extremely suspicious like N’Getich who came out of nowhere to run sub 29 to break the road WR and someone who’ll probably be popped too. The other woman who broke 29 that she ran with has already been caught. But congrats to Kejelcha for finally getting it right!
Wow cray cray, It's amazing how much better he is then Jacob Kipllimo (whose record he broke) on the shorter stuff while dominating the longer stuff
You think so? Kejelcha has 1 silver in the 10k compared to 2 bronzes for Kiplimo. 12:38 5k pb to Kiplimo's 12:40. 7:23 3k losing to Jakob compared to Kiplimo's 7:26 beating Jakob (from 2020). Now 1s faster in the half marathon in supposedly bad conditions solo, compared to Kiplimo who ran an absurd positive split (26:37 10k, faster than Cheptegei's 15k WR en route) also solo to also break the WR by 1s.
I'd be a bit surprised if Kiplimo could run 3:47i, but he ran 7:26 to beat Jakob (in 3:28 shape) in September 2020, then ran 57:37 in December 2020, so 3:48-49 seems reasonable.
Comparing them now, I get the feeling they're nearly the same athletes. In Oslo last year, they both went to the line and got the same 12:41.73 time. In Oslo this year, Kejelcha got the edge 12:38 to 12:40. In the Olympics this year it was Kejelcha 6th/26:44 to Kiplimo 8th/26:46. Maybe Kejelcha has the edge over shorter distances, and Kiplimo over longer ones? My gut puts Kiplimo's half as a slightly better performance (not to take away from Kejelcha's today, he still ran the faster time ofc).
I really hope we can see them face off in a half marathon next year, that would be a must watch race. I'm also really glad he got the WR. Simultaneously holding the indoor mile WR and the half marathon record is nuts; How many people have done that? Pretty absurd range.
