Looks like SEC schools will be buying elite recruits. Why would coaches waste time trying to develop an athlete if they barely have enough roster spots to field a full team.
Bye, bye, NCAA.
If true, it feels like a political play to force legislative action.
Son is on an official overnight visit right now for a D3 school. Booked a room, dropped him off earlier and am just hanging out having some food and drink before we depart tomorrow.
Today, heard from one of the D1 enrollment schools that was recruiting him and was told they will opt in. Was initially told they would not opt in just a couple of months ago.
Said there may be a XC spot for him but don’t know if there will be a t&f spot, and they may have club track for those on the XC team. So, things are moving fast and are hella fluid right now.
As I sit here I don’t think D1 is worth all the trouble right now. Loving what I am seeing from this D3 program by the way.
Got some D2 schools looking at him too but just not thrilled about the academics.
Lots of runners in D1 are about to be cut to get within the roster limits and they will be looking for a home. Unless you are ELITE, it may be difficult to secure a D1 spot out of HS right now.
This'll encourage more people to go to D2/D3 schools, but annoying that this is happening in the first place.
I do think some low-end athletes at these D1 schools will ultimately find more success if they are forced to attend a D2 or D3 school and will realize it was better in the long run
But seriously? 10 people for XC? What the hell. It was just fine at 17/45. But yknow, football.
The Big Ten won’t be far behind unfortunately. Nebraska already retroactively cut their XC rosters to 12, which makes cutting to 10 more manageable.
Title IX + recent lawsuits regarding NIL is to thank for this. If Title IX was the sole problem, this would have been done decades ago.
Carlson looks like a genius for leaving!
10 is brutal! You can run 9 at conference.
No one get hurt or you are limping through that bad boy
That seems impossible with Oregon in the Big 10.

How do you retroactively cut?
It's pretty clear what's going to happen, with ten man rosters there is effectively 0 room for developmental runners, everyone needs to contribute right away. What does that mean? Good luck making an SEC roster if you're not a 5th year D3 national champion, 8:45 high schooler, or 13:45 international runner.
You're going to see conferences like the Atlantic 10/Patriot League/D2&D3 turn into minor leagues and students will go run their 5th year in the big league.
Ironically, the football money is going to push the focus back to academics for olympic sports, and if you grind for a few years you can run a season against Habtom Samuel. I don't hate it. But, get ready, because to run for a NESCAC you're going to have to be a 9:0x guy in a few seasons.
This is honestly going to save a bunch of 9:25 guys from walking on at Portland and tossing out applications to Fleet Feet until age 35.
This is unverified and not being reported by any legitimate news source, just some high schooler who makes those corny commitment edits, who dystat and runnerspace reposted. Until corroborated, I'm skeptical.

Does Oregon care about XC anymore?
This is such a dumb, shortsighted move for football. They’re going to add 20 more roster spots that they will fill with five star recruits, each demanding a large NIL deal to play for the school, and many of whom will transfer after one year because of lack of playing time. They’re destroying their running programs so they can throw more money at football guys who will take their limited NIL funds but never play a down for the school. There is only so much playing time in football as it is. Going from 30 to 50 guys on the roster who don’t even dress each week is not going to make their program better.

All true...but ADs only care about revenue. Running is an expense not bringing in any money.

Thank title IX for this.
Title IX is not the problem. Football is.
Football loses 20 roster spots.
