Robert C Gallo, Anthony Fauci, Jonas Salk, Sabin etc.
I want to be a scientist, but not a clinician.
Is there a way to get out of dealing with patients if I go to medical school?
Ok my brother, because I have a lot of patience and mercy, this is for you. This is the answer. Strive to do everything possible to get into this program. It’s tailor made for a guy like you.
CCLCM???s 5-year research-based medical school program trains students to become physician investigators. All students receive a full tuition scholarship.
Quit messing around on LRC and start improving yourself in every way that will enable this to happen. If you have to go kick butt in a masters program and work at a clinic first to get in, then go do that. Go build your resume.
I wish you luck! A family member of mine is in a medical-adjacent PhD program with the goal of working in the industry but with no interest in treating patients or working in a hospital. The goal is to continue research but outside of the university where they are now. The thinking is, it will be more science and less "blood and guts." But it depends on what you are good at. Are you great in the lab? Or are you great with other people. It takes all kinds! :)
p.s. Why do you post about yourself on this board? In theory, Letsrun is for "things we would talk about on a long run together" and/or running related topics. It isn't meant to be a place for you (or Jamin in the olden days) to just come on here and extract free therapy from the running community. If we were out on a long run together, would you go on and on and on about yourself?

I could listen to fast boy talk about himself for hours. Our long runs would turn into ultras
Radiology. They literally never set eyes on an actual human being. Anesthesia is pretty close. They say hi before surgery but 98% of their job is while the patient’s asleep.
You've got lots of options. Radiology and pathology for example. MDs can get MBAs and law degrees. You can work in industry (for pharmaceutical companies big and small) doing clinical trials and developing new drugs for bad diseases. You can work for the FDA or the NIH. An MD opens up lots of doors and you absolutely do not have to see patients if you don't want to. I got my MD in 1999 and in 2003 after finishing residency I finally accepted that I do not enjoy seeing patients. I had no idea what to do but then found my way into industry and am now 15+ years into a satisfying and fulfilling career. Good luck.
Probably no avoiding treating patients as you train to be a doctor, but you certainly could use your degree in a way that doesn't have you seeing patients.
