Bates said that based on her workouts and the data her coach Joe Bosshard collects, she believes she is in 2:18 or 2:19 shape right now. She doesn't think this is the first time, either, but pointed out that in previous races, either the weather was too warm, the course was tough, or something else has gone wrong (she tore her plantar fascia after stepping in a pothole in Chicago last year).
She is hoping that the Chicago Marathon on Sunday is when the stars finally align for her but said she'd be happy with any improvement on her 2:22:10 pb.
