He said he didn’t think there was any threat Jakob would break his record at the Olympics, that Jakob had a bad 1500 but a great 5000. Then he was asked what he thought he could run with all the modern tech. Jakob asked the interview what he thought and the guy said 3:25. ElG said he would run 3:24 minimum

Does 3:24 minimum mean at least that or more, or that or less?

It was El G, not Jakob asking the interviewer what he thought he could have run, and the interviewer said 3:25, then El G said no 3:24 easily with all the technology. He also says he does some ”tours de piste” from time to time, but I’m not sure if that refers to workouts or just running in general.

Some things never change. After running 3:26.0 in 1998 with still some races remaining, inclulding at Monaco, El G claimed that he would run 3:24 'minimum' before the end of the season.

In response to the super shoes question, that’s hardly unreasonable. 3:26 already almost certainly means he could run 3:25.99 or faster, so claiming he could run 3:24.99 or faster with supershoes is believable.

Makes sense. it often that a PERFECT run on a perfect day feels effortless. It is similar to hitting a 500 foot home run. Everything is so perfect, it feels easy and like there is more in there.
El G may have gained more from the even splits afforded by wavelight than whatever the shoes offer. Though maybe with the full on EPO the crazy first lap is not as punishing. Timmy's fastest races were run with stupid first laps as well, which is also interesting. Not accusing. I like him a lot.

El Guerouj’s claim that he could have run 3:24, or faster, and three bucks, will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

No need to diss the GOAT miler.
He would have run 3:24 with the new tracks and shoes.
Don't forget how this man DOMINATED this competitive event for 7 years.

3:24 is definitely in his wheelhouse, with modern technology and 1990s drug testing
I've a feeling his coach ordered El G to reign it in a little after that 3:26.0. It was getting ridiculous, and him and his coach knew that EPO testing could come in the next year or two.

Sure, he could have run 3:22. That time is equivalent to 1:39, 7:11 and 12:20. It’s amazing he ever lost a race having that kind of talent.

But we know that 7:17 is clean. We know that for sure. About 6 seconds faster than Hicham. But at least we know Jakob is doing it the clean way.
