Its been 103 years since Tampa was struck by a major hurricane. The 1921 storm killed a few and did 10 million in damage (175 million in today dollars) but Milton will likely do far worse. Before that, 1848 was the last major hurricane to hit tampa.

St Pete's Beach has been decimated by 2 storms since August and Milton is supposed to be the worst. They're talking about turning off all the power and water before the storm.
They're still trying to recover from the last two.
Yet, they will continue to elect the people who deny climate change. Unbelievable.
But maybe, it's just that the Gulf of Mexico is at record level temperature and that gives all these storms more energy. But that would be science and they don't believe in that in Florida.
In preparation for the imminent landfall of the hurricane, the Harris/Biden administration and FEMA are taking extra steps to ensure the illegals in Tampa and the surrounding areas have everything they need.

They actually passed a law here that climate change can’t be referred to as a reason for any other law!

Not that it makes a lick of difference whether or not this hurricane were to have taken place, but Desantis is not a climate change denier. Do some research before you post next time.

Instead of building a wall along the Mexican border to prevent illegals from entering the US, they should transfer those funds (from mexico?) to build a wall along the gulf from New Orleans to Miami (or up to the Carolinas on the atlantic side) to prevent the water from coming ashore. Surely the Hurricanes are doing more damage to the economy than the illegals? Fema bills are going to be in the trillions at this rate. Either that or ship some Icebergs from the Artic or Antarctic to cool down the gulf water - since they are breaking away anyway (worthwhile salvage/towing job for anyone interested). I'm sure Musk can figure this out when he gets into power in a month (as the power behind the throne).
Milton is now a strong cat 4 with sustained winds at 150 mph (cat 5 is 157+). Like Helene, Milton went from a tropical storm to a major hurricane in just 36 hours.
Milton may weaken a bit before making landfall as dry air from a cool front may get pulled into the storm. But still, it would be a strong cat 3 and storm surge will be at least 8-12 feet and winds will still be 120 mph or better in the best case scenario. Helene already scraped the beaches and dunes, which will mean that storm surge will just roll over the barrier island and have a greater impact inland. And the surge will also be more destructive because there are still piles of Helene debris all over that have not been picked up yet. So, it will be a storm surge full of Helene debris.
The nightmare scenario is a storm that holds together as a cat 4 and goes right up Tampa Bay. There are oil refineries and oil and gas terminals that could be heavily damaged by a 12 ft + storm surge. The big danger is that the surge rips one of the big oil storage tanks off its moorings and drags it across other storage tanks and refinery equipment causing a massive release of gasses or liquids into the air or water (or both).
Just looked at the FEMA flood map for Tampa Bay. The 100-year flood elevation is around 10 feet, which is about what the predicted storm surge is. Not looking good - huge swaths of Tampa and St Petersburg in the blue.
It is now a cat 5. 160 mph winds. Tampa is right in the center of the cone for the storm tracker, but a lot can happen over the next 48 hours. Least worst outcome at this point would be for the eye to pass to the south of Tampa bay. That would keep the worst of the surge out of the bay. If the eye comes up the bay or just north of the city, this will be one of the worst storms in FL history.

While it is true that DeSantis is not responsible for the intensity of this hurricane his policy of not allowing any bills that reference climate change does make him responsible for hurricane intensity at some point in the future - 20 years? 30 years? Who knows, maybe 50-100 years.
This is a "hundred year storm" so you'd expect one every ~100 hundred years which is to say, they are expected to occur.
Temperatures fluctuate. We've had a slight cooling the past 10 years and hurricane count and intensity is down over the past 20 years.
You all should consider this storm a reversion to the mean and not the result of a trend that we ultimately have little control over (the global warming hoax).
