Even on weekend nights, the movie theater is mostly empty. Sometimes they are playing a movie for just one or two small parties. They occupy a significant amount of real estate. How can this be sustainable? Will movie theaters just go away in the near future like DVDs did? Don’t people value the big screen experience and stepping out of home anymore?

Family of 4 with popcorn and drinks is easily $100. That is what is killing theaters. No more matinee prices, no more dollar theaters. You can get 3 or 4 streaming services for a month for that price

FWIW, I paid $16.25 for the movie Blink that I’m watching in a theater literally all by myself.

Galaxy 9 here in town is always packed. Some movies like Avatar need to be seen in a theater. Nothing compares to that massive screen and that sound system. If you can't afford the experience that's on you,

Movies, generally today, suck. More and more sequels and reboots every month than original content being put out, and original content even isn’t that great. I went to the movies all the time about ten years ago for the sole reason that great movies were being made. Not all of them suck, there are some great movies coming out every year, but generally. Yes, movies are crap anymore. Nobody wants to pay for that stuff. Marvel X-Men 10 vs the Green Goblin or whatever, it is just too stupid to comprehend.
They are releasing the exact same stuff now that used to go straight to DVD, not fit for the screen. That means they are not even trying. Another bureaucratized, union-captured industry that has run out of product and turned into a train wreck.

Movies suck these days. Also, in an era when an 85 inch TV is affordable to the average person, why would anyone go to a theatre instead of just streaming at home? Any random person can basically have a theater in their own home today.

I live in a small college town. There are literally over 30,000 people here, mostly young people, and our movie theater just closed. As someone who grew up in the 90s and has always loved going to the cinema for big movies, it's upsetting, and honestly kind of scary. Some movies are just meant to be watched and experienced on the big screen. I don't want things to go to stream only.

You could say the same about the NFL and NBA but they are not struggling to fill stadiums or arenas even with higher prices. Except bad teams, as has always been the case.

The difference is that movie theaters are playing a recording while the NBA and NFL are providing a live performance. Like I said, I can pretty much replicate the movie theater experience at home these days. I can't replicate an NFL game or a broadway show at home. That's why I haven't been to a movie theater in 20 years but I'll pay $400 for Les Mis tickets and others will pay real money for NFL tickets while movie theaters die.

oh wow maybe i can drink an overpriced beer now, but again that's not a tech advance
get rid of the typical stadium seating, make it more of lounge with a bunch of high top tables and suddenly you have a bar with a massive TV to show big sports games on or whatever people want to watch
hollywood has lost it's allure, it got too woke and they change the camera angles so often it feels like i'm going to have a seizure half the time

No they didn't. This is a boomer take and completely out of touch with reality.
What killed movies was the cost of a ticket & movies being generally terrible the past 10 years due to wokeness and DEI.
Sorry, but I'm not paying $100 dollars for my family to go see a movie that sucks or shows some weird sexual deviant stuff.
Add in popcorn and drinks and it's $150 dollar experience to watch a movie that is terrible and pushes weird agendas.

You can have a virtual cinema sized screen with a VR headset or a growing number of AR glasses that are already becoming popular. I only watch movies now in VR with my Meta Quest 2. And of course, you can watch Avatar in 3D. Cinemas will be dead in 10 - 15 years, and probably television sets as well.
