Colleges for a 4:12-14 kid (as an 11th grader)

Its hard to answer with the unknown of which schools are going to go up to roster limits going forwards. But it will probably depend on your cross results and if youve performed well in big meets.

Maybe Barber College?

that’s a very solid junior year time, 5 years ago would’ve gotten looks toward the top of the heap. Would focus on 2nd tier athletic schools with decent academics in the Patriot league - lehigh, colgate, bu, northeastern, etc - good luck

i had a kid with those times get a lot of money this year from a p4. can you break 60 on the last lap in a 4:12-4:14 race?

A10 schools. Loyola Chicago - although they seem to have quite a few foreign students now.

pass on Hopkins - zero lift in admissions from coaches. If you want to target D3, try the little ivy in the nescac - Williams, Wesleyan, or Amherst. Coach support is real with admissions in the nescac

It doesn't sound like you are actually interested in colleges. It sounds like you just want to join a track team. You can probably find a track club to join that won't cost $50K/yr.

Sounds like UMBC could be a good match for you. In terms of academics, price and coaching. Do a questionnaire and email you should hear something shortly. Patriot League will cost you more if your EFC is full pay.

I mean 80% of most P4 rosters are guys that ran 4:12 as a junior. Have some fun and go to Nuttycombe pick a team you like and write down Top 7 and look up high school junior PR in 1600..

Yeah, but if he's a 4:12 guy, why would he want to go D3? He could easily be a sub 4:10 guy next year, which would get him some decent D1 money.

No you didn't. Most wouldn't even take him. None will give any money. Your kid lied to you or he didn't understand that his discount was based on need.

Are people insane? A 4:12 as a junior in HS should not be looking at D3 unless that's where they want to go.

I guess these super conferences may screw over people as in an 18-person league it's hard to win. But if he runs 4:12 as a junior, he's likely to run like 4;07 as a senior at least. How many kids in the country do that?

The key is are you any good at xc?

If you want a full-ride, yes, look at some lower lwevel school but I'd think plenty of P4 schools would be happy to have you.

Sorry. you like many others are completely detached from reality. There is money from bottom of the barrel D1 schools for 9:30 type two milers. And money from P4 schools for kids in low 4:10s if those times were run in the right races with the right results.

ouch - but like everyone on this site says, D1 coaches recruit times, not potential. Wish this wasn’t the case - but if this 4:12 kid has been running road races since he was 10, I would say upside is much more limited than the soccer kid who switched to running sophomore or junior year.

They recruit both times and potential. A 4:10 guy who ran that with imperfect pacing / weather and off 35 mpw has more upside than the 4:10 guy who runs 65 mpw in California and can only run his times at meets where he’s dragged along

sooo many more elements go into this - the kid with the public school coach who knows zero about the sport and is just collecting a paycheck vs the 30 year private school coach with the home course named after him - problem is there are many embellishments from coaches etc with hs kids that all try to convey massive upside - even when it’s all been sucked out. Mileage is a biggie - any hs kid running 65+ miles senior year summer? pass

Pass on all kids who are serious and show they’re committed to the sport. Seems smart. You know, like Nico Young, Casey Clinger. It’s fine to try to find diamonds in the rough. But serious kids often progress well, too. The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior.
