Set in 1995. Nobody has got within 11cm since. Obviously clean as united kingdomers have integrity and don't cheat.
All the other older records are either soviet countries (all doped), USA (mostly doped) or non events like race walking. I couldn't be bothered looking at the women's side. Marita Koch off the top of my head - possibly most doped person in history
This has always hurt my heart. Jon is an amazing human being, and always went out of his way to help out young athletes in our club. He was quick with words of encouragement, and do not think I ever heard him say a poor word about someone. He was always available for a fundraiser, and had a wonderful sense of humour. He was a devoutly religious man, and had a massive impact on some of the more wild boys in our athletics club. I don't know what happened, but truly hope that he finds his way back.
Wouldn't have prevented the father Aouita from fleeing to it in order to dodge the Brits, if he could jump.
Let examin this equation
Aouita - Ultra Lower Conditions > Coe (the hiding coward) + UK Support and Conditions
Aouita trained at the French national sporting institute in Marseille (on the understanding that he would represent France) and still couldn't break 3:40. When he went up two levels immediately after moving to Italy, the King of Morocco financed him, just like he did El G and the rest. He was able to train in Italy, France, Morocco, the USA, and Mexico.
Coe had dreadful support, especially medical, which is why it took so long to correctly diagnose his blood infection. All the British runners in the 80's were breaking down from injuries that would have been correctly diagnosed and fixed today, or even back then in countries like the USA or Germany. Cram, Elliott, Moorcroft.
Not sure the situation has changed much today with Max Burgin's problem finally diagnosed correctly after 3 or 4 years of missing 90% of training and races. Or Matt Stonier, Jed Heyward, Gourely, Wightman etc
There probably is not a single world record that was achieved clean. Elite athletes have been doping for decades. It's always been considered a de facto requirement to compete at that level.
I don't know what happened, but truly hope that he finds his way back.
He lost his faith. It happens, even among mature adults. (More frequent in a younger cohort, in my experience, though Charles Darwin also gradually and completely stopped believing as an adult.) To quote Edwards from the article:
"Seven years on I don’t feel a gap in my life and I suppose that’s the proof of the pudding isn’t it? Had I suddenly thought that life doesn’t quite feel right, maybe I’d re-examine that – re-examine my faith. In fact, more than ever, I feel comfortable with where I am in life."
Few people who just stop believing, as he did--that is, not as the result of a specific event--ever seem to resume it. Once a person simply finds god(s) to be unbelievable, there's not much going back. The previous belief, in retrospect, just seems a bit silly or even weird.

What happened is that he saw the light and learned that God is nothing more than a fairy tale.
