Haven't seen anything about this but he was Oregon's #1 and ran 24:10 on the tough course. He did run 23:44 but he is only recently back from a major injury. Could be a good sign.
True, but this dude ran 3:37.9 a week before his 18th birthday and 1:47.9 3 weeks later; I don’t think hilly 8k XC is necessarily his strong suit. Nathan Green ran 3:32.2 at the Trials and was just 45th at Nuttycombe in 24:10, over a minute behind the winner.
Glad to see all of the C/O '23 phenoms like the Youngs getting back into their game. The transition from HS to college is never easy, so it's really hopeful to see these boys thrive back into it after a rough start.
He was over a minute behind the winner. He has a long way to go to becoming one of the best runners in the NCAA.

Nathan Green was 3rd at pac-12 XC last year, only 15s behind Ky Robinson. He prob just had a rough race at Nuttycombe.

I am so happy to hear that. That whole class was treated as if they had the potential to rewrite the record books but they need to make the transition to college first.
It is a good start, that's for sure. Glad he is back running!
Yes. Thanks for writing a bunch of stuff to agree that he won't be a threat.
A really important question is how many cross country runners can run a 1:47x 800m? I looked at some previous results on that course going several years back and only a couple middle distance runners ran sub-24.

Its also worth noting that he is 100% a miler which makes this all the more impressive.
I am not sure what that even means. Joe Falcon was a 3:49 miler but he was also an NCAA cross country champion. Birnbaum seems to be a guy who will compete at 1500 and 5000m before his college days are over, and it is difficult to say what his best distance will be. Cooper Teare is pretty good from 1500 to 5000, and can even run a respectable 800m. So time will tell where Birnbaum slots in regarding his performance profile.

Sad to see what happened to him at Oregon. Wish he’d have gone to Univ of Washington.

I had two on my own team (Hood, Bruton) at university, though Nial’s was on a relay. This was also the days long before super shoes and this double threshold craze.
