Due to certain obligations I have the next 18 months to train before my racing resumes.
My major weakness is my top speed. So I'm very keen on developing explosiveness and increasing my maximum velocity. Am currently looking into programs like Jumari's speed program which I can do for the upcoming months
But base building is also a MAJOR part of improving as a middle distance runner (400-5000). But from my current understanding doing something like a more baseline version of the Ingebrigtsen regime (long threshold workouts etc) would be counterproductive to top speed development?
So is there any way to marry the 2 and train to develop both concurrently? Or would it be better to split the next 18 months and focus on developing each area individually at different periods? If so how should they be split? I'm quite the rookie when it comes to training philosophy so wondering if anyone has any input?
