The Cow Harbor Race is a big reason why going back like 25 years Northport always has a strong distance team. The whole town comes out for the race and kids grow up knowing running is something that people respect (and that lacrosse - affirmative action for mediocre white athletes - isn't the only sport they can do).
Great race with that hometown, local feel. Northport is a really nice town (also high-end). Amazing they get that support year in, year out. Great they are now the USATF 10k champs, for the 3rd year? It usually makes the local news too.
Tangentially, good to see that the USATF road circuit winner gets $30k. Hopefully, it keeps increasing. Although being an Olympian (or medalist?) would be considered the pinnacle of a distance running career, it is good that there are other avenues available for those that want to pursue a pro career and would not otherwise be able to compete on the track.
There used to be a syndicated show ("Running and Racing", maybe) which would show highlights, but I haven't seen that show in a few years. The local news show might do a story with some video of the race.
I did a little research on The USATF Road Circuit (USARC), looking to see how Tennis handles their developmental tour. I was urprised to learn that if you are a lower level player, you have to pay your own travel, accomadations and food at these smaller tournaments. Unless you have a benefactor or wealthy parents, a year on the tour can cost around $100K. This is with traveling alone. If you want to bring your coach or physio, you have to pay for them too. Many of these pros have equipement/clothing deals, but it is only free stuff, no money (sound familiar?). Also, they are considered independent contractors. Some have to decide whether they can afford health care. If you are good enough to get through the qualifying at a tennis major and then exit in the first round, it is still a decent payday of around $75k (a 2022 figure).
The USARC can be considered the top circuit in the US, but don't know how runners' expenses are given out for races. I have read that at Cow Harbor, the tradition is for the elites to stay with local families. Maybe the top-ranked get air-travel compensated also?
It seems there are many athletes in multiple sports trying to make ends meet. Of course, we only hear about the top-tier/ranked athletes.
Only way Bor doesn't win is if a guy dressed up in Shakespeare attire runs onto the course and holds him back. He was so dominant at New Haven and has been winning everything else on the roads.
Another race that has had enough of USATF. Look for them to disappear after this year. And to the poster that talked about the circuit. That’s pretty much gone as well.
