World Athletics announced today that the Wanda Diamond League will up its prize money by a lot in 2025.
This year the Wanda Diamond League (DL) paid out 25k in prize money per event and there were 14 DL events at Diamond League. So that's $350k per event in prize money at each one. Next year that will increase to $500k per meet (with it varying by event between 30k and 50k). That's a 42.8% increase.
Next year's final will have $2.24 million vs $1.92 this year. The total prize money dished out next year will be 9.24 million for the DL events. They also revealed they give out basicaly that same amount - another 9 million in appearance fees.
The new total is almost a third higher than the sum paid during the pandemic-affected period of 2021-2024, and the highest ever since the Diamond League’s launch in 2010. Including promotional fees for top athletes, a total of around US$18million will be paid to athletes in total over the course of the 2025 season, with many more millions being invested in athlete services such as travel and transport, accommodation and medical and physio provision.
PS. Grand Slam Track will have $12.6 million in prize money next year.
