pretty good and honest post-race interview. said it was way too fast and too long for him, he would not have been able to stay with the group the whole way, neither mentally nor legs-wise. just got the national record for 10 km, then jogged in home in 63. also said it's kind of a way to force himself to rest now.
Not great, but not bad by any means. Keep in mind that he started this half-marathon 36 hours after running a 3:30 1500m i Brussels.
Jakob did a 27:54 in a 10k road race a couple of weeks after turning 19 (in bad conditions) He definitely has more potential in the half-marathon.
Also, he has been toying with Europe's best 10000m runners in the European XC Championships (2021 and 2022.) Absolutely destroyed runners like Kaya, Gressier, Cairess, Kimeli, Crippa, etc.

It definitely shows that a 10k and half are really different for a guy whose best distances are probably 3k/5k.
I’ve never bought that Jakob was actually a “half marathon man”, rather the best 3k/5k talent ever and so good that he can still dominate 1500/10ks. Maybe the 800 is too short for him and the half too long for now

I still think he can break the HM one day with specific training and his supreme talent, but no, he's definitely not a HM guy despite his double threshold works. He's either a 3k/5k or a 5k/10k guy.
As for marathon, I don't think he will ever try one tbh except as a fun run.

So Jakob's debut half was 1:03:13, which is slower than...
Seth O'Donnell's win at the burnley half last week in 1:02:05, winning by 2.5 minutes and having to pass runners for at least the last 5k, with a lead bike to show the course and several hairpin turns. Was by himself the whole way.
The women's world record, Letesenbet Gidey ran 1:02:52.
Dejen Gebresselassie (the Aussie guy who made the thread about qualifying for Australia in either the 1500 or 5000 for the last olympics when he is an obvious half mara/mara guy). Dejen has run 1:02:39.
Over 5 minutes slower than the mens world record.
Was 5 minutes behind the winner of the Copenhagen half, so much for wanting to win everything.
Slower than 33 runners at the Copenhagen half, of which I only know who one of them is, Jacob Kiplimo.
If he ran 2 63:13 half maras back to back, I think he would just scrape inside the world champs mara qualifier, I think it's 2:06:30 now.
And Stewy McSweyn has ran 1:02:52, very soon after a diamond league race as well, but no one claims he is a half mara runner, Jakob couldn't even beat Mcsweyn's pb, and Brett Robinson has run 59:57, balancing his training with making lame podcasts.

Keep in mind that Hassan started her marathon 34 hours after winning bronze in the 10k and won gold while Jakob couldn't even run faster than Gidey's half marathon debut.

the 10k is closer to the marathon than a 15 to a hm though. If Jakob trains like a10k guy, I assume we all agree that he would be running something between 25:55-26:05 which presumably translates into a 1:58 marathon. Add 3-5 mins for a lack of specific training, it would still be well under 2:05 which would've been more than sufficient to win in Paris this year even if you account for the hills.

Where I’ve been at with this one, and I’m not sure as about breaking the record (which Aregawi/Kiplimo might push further down). I bet he’ll race a marathon though, out of curiosity though less sure if he ever becomes a marathon guy. Certainly there were factors today that hurt (nearness to race, well after base training). I still think he runs in the 58s with a little focus during base training. But I don’t think he has interest now unless he can contend

I still don't doubt that he's a half marathon man, he just needs to treat the distance with more respect next time. Better pacing, better scheduling within the season and more distance specific training.
He probably needs to skip the 1500 if he wants to make a serious attempt at the world record. Have an event range like Mo Farah and not Sifan Hassan, who's just in a completely different universe when it comes to range.

and Kerr's 61:51....
That's worse for Jakob than any of the other times I mentioned, even if it was downhill, a double thresh guy like Jakob who is weighed down by his ego as much as Jakob is would probably think he could run a faster flat HM than a Kerr weighed down with pies and beer could run a downhill HM, or even falling a HM distance above the earth.
