Before we begin, here's some quick background on my running history:
PRs:
4:40 1500m, 10:00 3k.
Mileage:
I've been running for 2 years.
First year, was at an inconsistent 30-60 miles per week. Then I got injured for 2 months.
Second year, post injury, built from 30 mpw to 70 mpw. Stayed at 70 mpw for 6 months.
Now:
I'm aiming to break 16:50 in the 5k.
At this moment in time I'm at around 17:15 fitness (based off a 2x2Mile, 1xMile LT repeats at 5:55 per mile and a 25 min tempo @ 6:00 per mile).
I have limited time for formal speed work, so I'm thinking of optimizing my training as the following:
- 70 miles per week + Strides after every easy run.
- 1x Tempo per Week
- 1x 16 mile long run per week
- 1x Lower Body Strength Training per Week
How good will this get me?
I'm thinking of doing this for the next 6-9 months. At the end of the first 6 months if I can't break 16:50, I'll do a 3 month phase of specific 5k training.
