Karissa Schweizer and 5th Avenue Mile

She is an extremely good runner who is very unlikely to be clean.

I didn’t pay that much attention to the sodium bicarbonate chatter, but is there something like that out there which can turn a decent 5000m runner into a world class miler?

I’m not a pro runner, but just looking at results and times for a few years, this result is a real shocker to me.

To reiterate with emphasis, is there something like that out there which can turn a decent 5000m runner into a world class miler, in a matter of just weeks, if not days??

I have just a standard knowledge, as a fan, of PEDs, and certainly not firsthand knowledge. astro’s post’s tick me off because I never thought (or maybe never wanted to think) it could be so effective. But generate effectiveness in a matter of weeks, if not days??

Bicarb is really effective for the 8 and 15 but much less effective the longer you go. There was a pretty big tailwind today. I think we saw some flukey performances. I mean, Josh Hoey 3:49 for second? Has he broken 4 otherwise? I wouldn’t overreact to Karissa’s result. Do I think that she can beat St. Pierre, Hiltz, Mackay, Johnson for a spot in the team? No. The race is net downhill, with a tailwind today, in super road shoes at the end of a long season. The results are always all over the shop. That 4:15, again, net downhill with a tailwind, only converts to 3:58-59 for 1500. Not that competitive on the U.S. stage anymore.

A 5000m runner who's also pretty good at the mile? OMG, who ever heard of such a thing??????

Wait a sec, you are saying a 4:15 only converts to a 3:58?

Jess Hull’s fastest mile this year was 4:19 on an indoor track. She has has never run a track mile that fast.

And if you are going to try and asterisk the performance with a ‘special’ wind today (which didn’t look that impressive on the livestream), consider this race has been run going back 43 years. Surely a ‘special wind’ today would have needed to be blowing flags sideways?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but to me, this performance seems to rank right up there with the remarkability of Jess Hull’s PB’s this season. Why? Because Hull is a miler, and set PB’s in her event, whereas Schweizer stepped down in her off-event and crushed the times previously run by world-class milers.

Why are folks like you either ignoring this performance, or trying to blow it off, as ho-hum? Schweizer has never, on the professional level, been considered a dual world-class 15/5 type, certainly at the level of Jakob.

Does anyone know what shoes she was wearing today? Looked like a road version of the dragonfly almost.

This is a slightly downhill mile in one direction. The wind is a huge help; fast times shouldn’t be a surprise. I’ve run this race (very fun.)

Her 4:14.8 would probably convert to a few seconds slower on the track. Still a phenomenal win for her though!

Nice to see Schweizer continue her recovery from severe injury; she is an incredibly kind athlete.

(For what it’s worth, Jenny Simpson never ran this race in super shoes hence her 4:16.)

It looks like Pascal has her gear dialed in. Hopefully, he learned from the mistakes he made in 2020.
