I think one of the most shocking race results this year was Karissa Schweizer at 5th Avenue Mile today. Schweizer has never been thought of as a world class miler, never having run the times, yet she equaled the course record of world class miler Laura Muir.
World class miler Jenny Simpson has won that race 8 times (beating the likes of Elle St. Pierre in the process), but has never run it as fast as Schweizer ran today.
Just three days ago, Schweizer ran a 5000m in a good, but not that remarkable, time of 14:47.5. She has never displayed an outstanding kick when running the 5000m distance. Yet today, she ran a world class road mile, and I’m dumbfounded.
Is Schweizer running the wrong event? Should she be doubling the 1500m and 5000m, instead of the 5 & 10?
It probably won’t happen here, but I’d like to hear what professional level milers, like ESP and Simpson, honestly think about it.
