Thanks for compiling this list. I was recently wondering about this...

If Jakob was an NBA team he would be like 70-10 against the rest of the World.

It is hard to understand the logic of people who try to claim that Jakob is not the best 1500m runner in the world.

This is like saying Lebron (or Curry) weren't the best active players when they were at there peak because "they lost the title half the time." They WON the title half the time too!

Jakob has an Olympic Gold in the event we are disrespecting him in. He has run the only 3:26 in eons. He won the Diamond League Final just last year. He also always drags these other guys to their PRs. He paced Nuguse to that 4:43 mile last year. Epic! Oh, and he is like 70 and 10 against the world in this event (if you add them all up).

Men’s Mile in Eugene was the insane last year (I was there). If you see a guy pull the entire field to a PR like Rudisha did, you know he is the best.

Being the best means performing around the year, every year, not showing up for one race and not being able to sustain those performances. Is Wightman a better runner than Nuguse right now because he has the global gold and Nuguse doesn't?

No, individuals on a team sport is not a good comparison. A better comparison would be saying the Cowboys have been the best team in the NFL the last few years because they won the most games but do not win when it matters.

Kerr has been a better 1500m runner than Ingebrigtsen the last few years.

I see what you're saying here - but any sport with a win/lose playoff bracket system provides a flawed comparison with an Olympics with Heats + SemiFinals + Final (+ Repechage) where 12 people advance to the the start line in the Final (and most importantly the 4-6 best competitors are all there too).

The men's Paris '24 1500 field started with 45 ppl.

Imagine a power seeded single elimination bracket like March Madness or NFL playoffs. 1v1 races widdling down to a 1v1 championship race .... my money is on Jakob making it to the championship and winning it.

Imagine a best of 7 playoff bracket like NBA or NHL. 1v1 races in a best of 7 series widdling down down to a 1v1 championship series .... once again my money is on Jakob making it to the championship series and winning it.

Great post and I agree if you look at their entire careers Jakob is clearly the best. But what would happen if you just took 2024? Kerr goes 3-2 (I think). Plus, Hocker and Nuguse are just getting started on their careers, while Kerr is finishing up. Would be interesting to revisit this in a couple years when they have got a few more races under their belt.

This is just pure cherry picking. You’re just not counting the times when Jakob won (e.g. - all the diamond leagues, the Euro Championships, and Tokyo 2021) and ignoring the times when Kerr sucked (Zurich, 2022 World Championships 5th, Commonwealth Games DFL). You’re also ignoring the fact that even when Ingrebrigtsen lost, he lost because he made the race and someone outgunned him. He was in every one of those races with 100 to go. At Zurich, at World Championships 2022, and at the Commonwealth Games, and at many DL races over the last 3 years, Kerr wasn’t even in the race. Kerr proclaims to want to be the best in the world and the best who has ever done it. EL G, Coe, and Jakob—the true greats—all lost races in their primes, but they didn’t drop turds with the frequency that Kerr does. These DL and Commonwealth Games performances matter when you proclaim to want to be measured against the standards of the best who have ever done it.
