Ok, I've been with my girlfriend for about 8 months and she's suggested for a while that we go to a local run club that is all over her social media. She doesn't run but stays active at the gym and stuff while I run on my own, nothing crazy but I race and do workouts and try to stay in decent shape. Well, we went to the run club and it was pretty eye opening to see just how many girls were almost exactly like my girlfriend, lined up in head to toe Lulu/Alo/Vuori with a mix of Alphaflys and Hokas for kicks. I shuffled along with them through 3 miles of talking about coffee shops, their favorite tv shows (Ted Lasso, The Office, Parks & Rec), or celebrity bs gossip. By the end, it felt like I'd done a trail ultra. I was exhausted! It was also a little eye-opening to see just how basic my girlfriend was in her "natural habitat." This has actually made me question my relationship with her and just left me with this weird feeling about it. I'm not some crazy avant-garde dude who has all kinds of niche interests but I did feel a little like that scene in Toy Story where Buzz sees all the other toys just like him on the shelf, except it was a whole run squad of my girlfriend and she just seamlessly mixed in with them. Am I crazy or overreacting? Is it that big of a deal to be with someone who is "basic" in their mid-twenties?

I award this one a solid 6/10. Was ready to write it off as a 2/10, but the prose comparing 3 miles of plodding to a trail ultra drew a chuckle.

This is wild, I had the opposite thing happen a few months ago. I took my girlfriend, a non-runner, to a dinner party with two other couples. I know the couples through various running groups. We talked about running, trail running, and ultras the whole night and my girlfriend just sat in silence with nothing to add. I think I give it to the "Basic" peeps, at least they have multiple interests to discuss. I think it's just everyone has different interests and when they don't align with yours, it's like they are speaking another language and all you can do is wait for them to say something you can actually chime in on. If you have shared interests outside of your running and her "basic" interests, then you should be fine. My GF and I share an interest in nature (birding, rocks, mushroom identification, etc.) so we have things to talk and do together, plus our own separate interests that we can do on our own time. Basic😂🤣 that’s a new one! But don’t expect crazy profound discussions in those kind of clubs, they are just there to show off most of the time! Find a competitive run club where you can find people that will push you and make you better💪🏿

Does she look good in leggings? Does she like coffee? Does she like sex? What’s the problem? Trust me 90% of the artsy girls really wish they were basic and 8% are insufferable narcissists , which leaves 2% of truly unique artistic girls and believe me they are not interested in a basic guy who is in a run club. They are into billionaires who live life to its fullest and aren’t wasting time trying to break 15 for a 5k

I actually made a conscious decision NOT to run with the guys. When we showed up, there was a group of guys all with their shirts already off, those Oakley sunglasses that look like something Hulk Hogan would wear, and all wearing carbon shoes. Most of them also had mustaches. I think they were honestly more basic than the girls.
