Runners World has published an excellent Q&A Sarah Lorge Butler has done with Mike Smith. In it, he reveals that Abdi Nur tore a tendon in his fall in the Olympics and already has had surgery.
SLB: Abdihamid Nur had this freak injury injury in the second heat of the 5,000 meters. How far into the race was that?
MS: It was 100 meters to go. He tore his post [tibial tendon], when his left foot got tangled with someone else. I’ve never seen an injury like that in my time as a coach. I’ve seen rolled ankles and irritation in that tendon, but I’ve never seen someone snap that in half.
I think we all have to remember in this business that you’re trying to mitigate risk and make it so what happens is planned. But there’s still an element of total luck in this, and really hard things happen. It isn’t about who deserves it. But yeah, we can probably come up with a lot of examples of really hard things that occur, where you did everything right, and it’s just the hand you got dealt. So it’s a chance to show himself and everyone else who he is and how he responds, and that’s what we’re going to focus on.
Anyone had experience with an injury like this? What's the prognosis and timeline for a 100% recovery?
