Her father's Canadian, and she's a dual citizen. I imagine the greater likelihood of making Canadian teams was a key consideration, but I don't know if there were other reasons. One of her older sisters also competed for Canada.

It does seem silly that that article introduces her as "London, Ont.'s Rachel Forsyth" (London is the location of the track club she registered with in order to compete at the national championships) and nowhere mentions she's entirely Michigan-raised.

I’m not sure what I would choose in this situation; I’m sympathetic. I’d like to hope that I’d be noble and compete for Team USA or bust but since that’s a long shot would I seek out a more predictable Plan-B?

The sprinter from Princeton (born and raised in US) competed for Australia. Athletes do this all the time to compete for “easier” countries.

Yes, Dad (Ian) and mom both ran for the Wolverines, as did older sister Anne. Sister Sara chose Michigan State (maybe got a better offer?) and Rachel is following her.

Anne competed for Canada previously, and assume that Ian made a team back in his day as well. Ian was from London, Ontario - so that is the connection. Although Anne was a member of the Speed River club (Guelph), so not sure what the connection was there, as competing unattached (as the Pretre boys are doing, although there must be some connection to Ontario) was also an option.

Rachel's Canadian 1500m team mate, Paige Marchant, is also from London (and same club) and attends Eastern Michigan.

This is the same as Aisha Praught-Leer representing Jamaica. Much easier to make the team.

2 Michigan parents and the Wolverines can't land this gal. Bugs me. We need to step up our game. Dudek, Dadamio, Flynn, now Forsyth. Wiffed on all of them. Sheesh.

I keep hearing people say this but Forsyth was a top ten miler this past season (in the United States) and she had to know that most if any of those faster than her were not likely to choose to go to Lima to compete in this event. In fact only Dylan Mcelhinney represented the US in the 1500 and she ran slower than Forsyth. now maybe not running the 15 in Michigan had something to do with this (limited times on her record) but my guess is it was more than just trying to take advantage of a loophole because shes "too slow" to qualify. especially if there is a history of this happening in the family.

To be fair, it may not be about the college, and moreso the opportunity to live somewhere new and out-of-state.
