Frank Shorter used to incorporate a bit of cycling into his training. The older he got the more he rode.
In one of those instagram pics that Aidan Tooker posted, Cooper Teare is sitting on the top tube of his bike. That’s a no-no if the frame is carbon fiber. More than likely nothing will happen to the frame but there is a possibility that it could.
Grant fisher did 2 hour bike sessions a lot when he was injured and broke the American record for 3k after like 4-5 weeks of running on ground. Gourley 3:47 mile off of biking too.
Also videos of Hocker swimming w/ Teare back in spring. One of those instagram videos of him cycling is from July 24. That was days before the games started. Seem like a big risk to be riding the roads w something that big coming up.
traditional wisdom of high mileage all the time is becoming a foreign concept If one is smart. numerous runners are xtraining and having great success.

I assume they replace easy runs or long runs with the bike. It should come as no surprise that your cardiovascular system does not know whether you are running or biking or swimming. Its just being stressed.
It is no secret that adding in other types of training can boost your performance while lowering the chance of injury. Weight training, biking, swimming, aqua jogging...these are all great for adding fitness to running ability without increasing impact injury potential, and there are plenty of pros who have come back from injury to quickly run great times after having gone hardcore on cross training while injured.
A lot of good runners are doing a ton of cycling. At the end of the day you just need aerobic fitness and speed work to be successful. If you can get that fitness on the bike while saving your legs the pounding of extra miles so that you can really nail the speed sessions on the track and hills, then that seems like the recipe to me.
It makes me wonder why do any slow, plodding Z2 running? Why not just XT the Z2 easy days to avoid the pounding?
Well if you are running like a marathon, you do need to get used to the pounding. I also suspect you miss out on some efficacy gains.
but I have been wondering how good a high school xcprogram you could have with like 25mpw running (say 4-5workouts) and then add in 5-7 hours biking/swimming/arc trainer. Huge volume of work and hopefully keep the kids healthy. Granted you would need facilities (trainers versus the road) and kids willing to put in 10 hours+. As they age up, you could up the mileage and decrease the xc a bit.

Could work but also feel some non workout running is essential to prevent injuries. The most effective prehab for running is more running.
As a current high school coach, I truly hope our competitors read this forum and reduce their running mileage to 25 MPW and bike as much as they can. I have coached a lot of cycling enthusiasts who suck at running because they refuse to run more.

Frank Shorter also *averaged* 17 miles a day between 1970 and 1980.
