She ran 4:59 last week in winning gold at the World Masters Championships.
She has six W55 world records.
One thing I've noticed about the best masters runners is that their heel lift is the same as an elite young athlete's. Gilshinan's heel reaches back all the way, whilst the woman who won silver, 18 seconds behind, hardly lifts off the floor almost like a hobby jogger.
When I watch a masters race, I can usually tell who will win in the first five seconds, just by observing the heel lift. Can any experts explain how these masters can maintain their heel lift? Is it their well-preserved muscle or joint elasticity? Do they do drills for this, or is it genetics and luck?
