Yeah for the most part you’re right and I agree. P4 coaches jobs are strictly to fill your 45 roster spots with people who’ve already proven they can strongly compete or score on a p4 level. That boils down to the top 1% of high school talent, and proven transfers, and internationals. Anyone requiring development can go develop at a small school and hit me up later.
What really sucks is my resumé or anyone else’s is worthless in the process at a p4 level. I’ve got multiple national champions under my belt - ok, cool how much money do I get? I’ve guided Kid X from walk-on to the Olympics - Sweet, the coach at Weasel State offered me a Jeep, you got a Jeep for me?
One caveat - you cannot pay internationals NIL or anything above the scholarship bc they’ll lose their student visa and be deported. So the international market will boil down to fully funded scholarship programs, and whoever can afford to or is willing to throw a 100% scholarship at someone.
