I know, I know. New York is giving them large appearance fees. But if they ran Valencia, the American Record -- 2:05:38 -- would be theirs for the taking.
So instead of getting the AR, they'll place like fourth and fifth at New York in 2:08. Yawn.
I'd like to see Mantz, Tollefson and Merber in the broadcast booth calling NCAA XC Champs this year. Mantz might surprise with keen race analysis and could boost interest in the 2026 World XC Champs in FL.

I’ve been hopeful then and other Olympians would go to Valencia this year. The timing is perfect. Alas.

It’s over. Valby has left the building.
Maybe you can enjoy watching Doris and Hilda go I & 2.

Mantz indicated he is eyeing the Tokyo Marathon in the spring and if he breaks the record it’ll be worth passing up Boston. It is an Asics race so maybe Clayton would get a decent appearance fee as well.
I feel like next year is the year to go for the AR if they're serious about it. Valencia would be marathon #3 of 2024 and #4 in the last 14 months. I know the last three have all gone well but I'm not sure you'd get peak performance out of guys who might need a bit of a break after the Olympics.
I think it makes sense to cash in by running NYC now (where even if they run poorly, it's not a big deal), and then if they want to take a crack at the AR, go to Chicago or Valencia next fall.
Running NY less than 3 months after Paris isn't a particular good strategy unless you are hoping to be injured for the greater part of 2025. Ask Molly Seidel how things went after she ran NY soon after the Olympics in 2021.

It's probably fine if you don't have an eating disorder
I can understand not wanting to pass up what I guess will be a great payday in Olympic year. To paraphrase Cole Hocker, I think this year's price is going to be higher than next year's price for Mantz and Young in NY.
If they're going for a Spring marathon, they should go for London if they're serious about running in the 2:04 to 2:05 range. London pays prize money for times rather than just places. London is also fast enough and there'll be a pack in the 2:05 range.
