-they didn't like that they fired Riley -some dude who quit sophomore year didn't like that running got in the way of class. Turned to alcohol. Ran a practice hung over and thought Reckhart should have been the one to be his mental health counselor instead of actually going to one.
-they told athletes if they were too sick to practice they probably shouldn't be racing
-they suspended seniors for hosting a massive house party during xc season. Then told them they wouldn't be on the team for the 5th covid year
Sounds like Kevin has a tough task on his hands because that team seems incredibly soft
I remember asking months ago, where is the Duke student newspaper on all of this? The article was very late but very good, especially toward the end with all the details.
Reckart will seemingly have a difficult time being hired on a similar level, if potential employers read that article and inquire further. And Wilbourn doesn't come across well at all. Then he wimped out by refusing to comment.
The most interesting tidbit to me was the near the end. It says all but one member of the women's cross country team signed the complaint letter late last fall. Just from sampling social media at the time my impression was that the two most prominent members of that team -- Amina Maatoug and Emily Cole -- had a positive situation with Reckart.
Obviously that was not the case. At least one of them signed it.

There's a lot more to it than that. You are editing and slanting in Duke's favor.

I recommend reading the entirety
Read the entire thing. Only thing I forgot to add was that they threw a party right before Nuttycomb and it seems like all of the non senior top 7 decided not to attend.
Reckhart isn't that great of a coach but the only thing this shows is the the 2024 Duke men's class was a massive cancer to the team
"On Sept. 23, following the Virginia Invitational cross country meet, six senior members of the track and cross country teams hosted a party for the program at their off-campus house. On Sept. 25, Reckart and Cooke learned about the party. They notified Rory Cavan and Austin Gabay, then-captains of the men’s cross country team, that they would receive a punishment for hosting the party at their house. On Sept. 29, the coaches informed Cavan, Gabay and Kreis that they would not be competing at the Nuttycombe Invitational, one of the biggest meets of the season and the best chance for them to qualify for the NCAA Championships. The other three people living in the house were not part of the top seven on the men’s cross country roster, meaning they could not be suspended from Nuttycombe. They received no punishment from the program. Kreis, Gabay and Cavan watched their seasons end Nov. 10, at the NCAA Southeast Regionals. Without Nuttycombe, nobody on the men’s team qualified for nationals. Three days later, Reckart, Cooke and Wilbourn summoned Kreis and Gabay into separate meetings, where the coaches infomed their runners that there would no longer be a spot for them on the 2024-25 roster, citing “attitude” concerns."
Yeah missing Nuttycombe was the reason they didn't qualify for Nationals....not the massive party they got WASTED at.
It's perfectly within the coach's right to not allow someone back onto the team for their 5th year and this sounds like a really smart reason to turn them down.

I was on the team and would say it was quite the opposite. The ‘24 men were all great guys that everyone loved. The house party they “hosted” was an annual track-wide team party that moreso happened to be at their house. One person got transported because of drinking on meds and Duke admin was notified and the coaches had to put the heat on someone, so it was the guys house even though they did nothing but generously provide the venue for an event that has occurred annually on the track team for 10+ years.

You just made them look even worse. They hosted a party and served alcohol to someone who was on medication and should not have been drinking. That person had to go the HOSPITAL and actually could have died.
There's not a coach in the entire nation that wouldn't punish those guys. They aren't martyrs, they're MORONS.

did they hold that person down and shove a beer bong down their throat? if youre on meds the responsibility is on you.

Yeah, wtf. How is anyone supposed to know who is taking what meds? The dumbo on the pills ruined it for everyone.
totally incorrect and this is where the article is slanted as well. The Athletic Department decided the discipline the athletes in question would receive, not the coaches.
The crux of the matter seems to be that a distance coaching change was made in the first place.
I have seen that type of thing all my life in other sports, like football. When a new head coach takes over and gets positive feedback from within the organization and players to retain a specialist coach, like special teams or offensive line, there is seldom a problem going forward. Those coaches verify the confidence level and often outlast the new head coach.
The problem is when the new guy gets power happy and decides he needs to replace everybody, including guesswork on a whim. Invariably there are major mistakes and replacement after one season.
That's more or less what happened at Duke.
It would be interesting to hear from Dalia Frias and Amina Maatoug. But I would guess they won't comment until out of college.

So who was it that the coaches should have put the "heat" on instead of the people who lived in the house? They had to do something since the Duke admin was notified, right?
again, the coaches didn't decide the heat. The discipline, errr heat, was decided by the Administration after the young lady was sent to the hospital. Why is that so hard to comprehend. And lastly, why does the article not clearly state that well known fact and the athletes comprehend they were not allowed to compete once it was elevated to the Administration?
