Thanks this is great, watching now. Carvie knows his track, I recall from previous messages on the board that he competed in hs and a bit in college. Carvie does impersonations of Jacob and Josh. Good stuff.

Longtime SNL fan. from what I remember about Dana, he ran a 4:24 in high school and was an xc runner in Montana. However I didn’t realize he still followed the sport, that’s awesome of him to have Hocker on the podcast!
What I got out of that is that Cole Hocker is a bit of a “dumb” runner. I don’t mean that in an insulting way and I don’t think he’s a dumb person. I mean he turns his brain off when he races. He doesn’t overthink it. He runs by instinct and he has great instincts.
Jakob was totally overthinking his race.
Hocker knew he passed Jakob, but after the race he didn’t know if he passed him on the inside or the outside until he saw a replay. His brain was off. He only saw the finish line and had to be the first to get there.
Now he really is smart about his approach to training and racing. He knew his PR was not indicative of how fast he could really go. Unlike prior years, he had a full block of uninterrupted training. It seems like he did not surprise himself with that 3:27.

You are calling Hocker dumb, but not in an insulting way?
Great interview. Dana Carvey must be on these message boards. Brojos, you gotta get him on the podcast
I'm stunned by what a track nut Carvey is.
Check out the interviews from the "Prefontaine - Fire on the Track" documentary from about 20 years ago. Carvey discusses his HS track days (including his PRs) and coming to practice the day after Pre died. It was pretty clear he was/is a big track fan.

'How do you think he does it? I don't know What makes him so good? He ain't got no distractions Can't hear those buzzers and bells Don't see lights a flashin' Plays by sense of smell Always has a replay 'n' never tilts at all That deaf dumb and blind kid
