(Starting in) 1968, a Kalenjin male runner has won gold for Kenya at every Olympics. This Kenyan ethnic group is famous for producing endurance athletes. But in 2024 the illustrious record was halted. Instead, Emmanuel Wanyonyi from the Bukusu sub-ethnic group of the Luhya (traditionally better known for producing football, rugby, basketball and volleyball players) emerged as the sole Kenyan men’s gold medallist.
