Coach McLaughlin got his start at Hope High School in Providence, Rhode Island as a coach and teacher. At Hope, Ted had my father, Bobby Doyle, as a student in class. My father was a baseball player, and mouthed off in class one day in April. Coach McLaughlin assigned him detention, but the assigned punishment was not to sit in a room for an hour. "Meet me down at the track," McLaughlin said. The "detention" was to run an all-out mile against the rest of the track team. Unexpectedly, my dad went on to beat the entire team.
Coach McLaughlin discovered and fostered my father's running talents which led to a career at UTEP, a 2:14 marathon and fifth place finish at Boston, along with two olympic trials appearances.
Coach changed the lives of so many people who will be eternally grateful for his impact. I certainly would not be where I am today without him. RIP.
