They are getting old and recovering from the Olympics.
I mean, the marathon's in late September, and they just ran the Olympic marathon earlier this August. I would have been very surprised if any Olympic marathoners did Berlin. I'd actually be a bit surprised if any do Chicago in October.
Other than 2014, one of them was on the PODIUM every year since 2013... Kipchoge lost when Kipsang WR'ed in 2013 as well, and Bekele still got third in 2021. It really will be a new era
I can’t wait to see how much Yeshaneh takes off her PB, and whether it’s enough FTW?
Now that the odds aren't in their favor I'm rooting to see both attempt a podium finish. Bekele stands a chance because in the past when he took training seriously he did well. Coming off a recent marathon may provide him enough fitness to surprise us in September considering he's still training. If he's back to his off season ways and gaining weight then ,"sa la vie".
Did I read this correctly.. no Americans in the field this year?
Not only is there no Kipchoge or Bekele but if I'm not mistaken this is the first World Marathon Major men's field without a WMM champion in it since Tokyo 2014. Tokyo 2014 had 2x World Champ Abel Kirui so you'd have to go back to Tokyo 2013 (the first time it was a WMM) to find a race without a WMM champion on the men's side. Please correct me if I'm wrong because I certainly may be.
That said the field is still quite strong especially considering its the first major since the Olympics. A WMM champ could also be added or not listed because of a slower PB like Yuki Kawauchi. Most likely we'll have a new WMM champ after this one though
The most encouraging thing for the field is Kandie headlining this close to race-day. With his injury woes, he’s typically a late addition or something goes wrong after an early announcement. If he’s had a good buildup I think 2:03:30 is the over/under.
