"Jakob Ingebrigtsen Says Lost Finals Are Things That "Will Haunt Me For The Rest Of My Life" But Also Motivate Him In Future Races"
Everyone loses occasionally. If you win four gold medals in four global championships and your failures keep you up at night, what hope is there for anyone else?
I admire athletes and spectators who have a bigger whiff of appreciation
There's some truth to that, but part of that attitude is probably why he's a champ in the first place. Never satisfied, always wanting to be faster and better until he's the absolute best in the world. I do hope one day when he's old and retired he'll be able to look back at this stage in his life and smile and what he accomplished
I agree, it's a double-edged sword, but the "goes home devestated"/"____ is overrated" crowd is kind of also toxic. The spectators of track and field are also pretty horribly one-sided
Jakob was raised to believe being the world's best 1500 runner was his destiny.
Fans the world over validated his obsession. He even said he wanted to be the GOAT.
Now it's obvious he's never gonna do it. Not a chance. Some of these fans going, "oh it's ok, the 5000 is your best event" are unintentionally rubbing it it. Because he's never gonna be the GOAT 5000 runner either!
Even if he wins a bunch more 5000 golds, he's not gonna beat 12:35 or even Gebrhiwet's 12:36. To be a true GOAT you can't have a stack of gold medals but no WR. Ask Jim Ryun!
The winners mentality is not the sunshine and rainbows I think a lot of people romanticize it as.
Your mental well being and your sense of self identity depends on being the champ, and racing perfectly, and training perfectly. Jakob will think of that 4th place finish and it will weigh on him the same way a hard breakup/rejection/life altering failure weighs on you.
Hes pretty clearly on the NPD spectrum, not dogging him, most high level athletes and public figures are, it’s a mental condition just like any other, but when you are constantly told you are the best and your brain always believes you must be the best and are the best.. when there’s evidence that you are objectively not the best on display to the whole world that keeps popping up, it’s probably extremely bad for one’s mental health.
Well, even though he has run 3'26"7x I clearly doubt that he will break 3'26"00.
However, for the 5000m, I would be surprised if he doesn't break the WR, and with some margin at that. His 7'54" 2 miles clearly indicates that 12'30" is realistic for him. I would actually put the over/under at 12'28".
Now, yes...he still has not done it (a bit like when people where saying that Cole Hocker was not a sub 3'30" runner despite closing in 52" a 3'30" race...).

Assumptions based on zero evidence. When was the last time he ran a fast, paced 5k like the races the 12:35/36 was from? Every time he’s raced them in the 5k over the past 2-3 years he’s beaten them easily, so I’m not sure how you can just assume he wouldn’t do the same in a paced race.
Mo Farah is someone people consider in that convo, and Jakob already has more WRs than Mo currently does. By age comparison, Mo didn’t even win a WC/oly gold til he was 27. Jakob has 4 by age 24. If you noticed how easy that Olympic 5k was for him, it does not appear they’re closing the gap on him in the distance either. So it’s not crazy to imagine this turning into a streak of 5k titles that used to seem unrealistic.

Why? Komen ran 7:58. That should get Jakob another 4 seconds, times 1.66, round up to 7 seconds.
12:41. Jakob's PR is 12:48. No point theorizing about someone else's equivalent, Jakob is a bigger dude than most 5000 runners and would be expected to perform better at 3000.
In any case, do you expect him to even try? He's nowhere close to the 5000 WR so far, has he shown any hint of being interested in that? He'll go for the 1500. That's his obsession. You'll see.
He's been at the top for a few years. Not that many get that many years at the top. Everyone's got their peak.

7 seconds faster than Komen over 5000m gives him 12:32. World record.
I don't know why anyone quotes his 12.48 as if it's in any way relevant. He hasn't shown any interest in a fast 5000 because he is focussed on the 1500, that's all.

This is not really a perfect comprehension of what he was saying. To start of, it was the interviewer who was making a point of asking if the loss/losses were breaking him down mentally. He was saying that all athletes, including him, have their bad races go through their heads, and bad choices in races that led to losses was something they all had to live with/deal with, and that it can «haunt» them.
But he was _also_ saying, that strong races, and good achievements gave good emotional feedback. And following this, that it was up to him, and other athletes, to make sure those achievements and the good feelings that came with suceeding, and being able to reap the fruits of work they put down, weighed up for the bad. Which is/was a big part of the mental work of competing in the top of sports.

Bold faced what you missed. Jakob is a big dude, a 1500 guy, don't assume he has the same equivalent 3000/5000 as someone like Komen. It makes you look stupid, even if you had been able to read the first time.
He is never going to try for the 1500 WR. He knows better than anyone it's way out of his reach.

A central trait in malign narcissism is being superficial.(For instance handing out psychiatric diagnosis superficially). Jakob doesn’t seem to qualify there. You on the other hand give some vibes by your post here.
Honestly he needs Gjert back... Needs to get some sense beat in to him... He thought Paris would be his "Brat"-summer with two easy golds... He was humbled. Now he will proceed to fast Diamond Leagues with paced runs going close to the WR, loosing the world champs and loosing 1500m in LA.

Unlike you I don’t have a crystal ball, and neither am I a know it all like you. But I think he has a very good chance to win the next global championships in the 1500m with a little adjustment of his opening pace.

Unlike you I am not presuming that people that come up with guesses about future performances are wizards with crystal balls.
What kind of adjustment are you thinking? Go out slower and then pick it up?
He's a miler because that is his greatest and toughest event. 5000m is boring to him because no one is close. There's no challenge there. He picks up 5000m golds like it is nothing. When you have that much at the end against the world's best runners at 5000m, you can run much faster than them all out for the distance. So, I think he will give the record a shot next year, though that may be after the current crop of 5000m also-rans with the bouncy shoes takes it down to the low 12:30s.
