Nah. Normally you'd have a point if this was just any marathon, but this race was tough as hell. Lots of really legit runners got totally destroyed today - see Levins, and a bunch of other 2:05 or faster guys..
I'm not shocked they got top 10, but the way they ran it was pretty impressive. To run that close to their PRs on a course like that? Now, I'm thinking maybe those guys saying Mantz could run 2:06 in Berlin weren't too far off.

I found it incredibly cringey that they felt the need to stand around at the finish line for awhile and make so many athletes' finishes about themselves by trying to congratulate and high five. If they medalled, that's one thing, but they weren't a factor in the race and hogged the spotlight from others. Gross.
You thinking them supporting their competitors is "making it about themselves" is a unique level or projection. Go to therapy and save yourself.some time
The reason they got top 10 is because they weren't chasing a medal. They know they aren't good enough. People like kipchoge go out with the lead pack until they die then they DNF, because theyre there to win/medal - its all or nothing. The Americans have a pragmatic/sensible approach based on their ability which means they will likely not blow up. That, coupled with a few DNFs and blowups elsewhere elevates their position somewhat.
If everybody ran to beat the Americans as the only goal, then the Americans would finish 20th not 10th.
Did you even watch the race? These guys ran front pack for the first half. Conner was in number 2 with Tola around the half, never dropped out of top 10 and Clayton was never below top 15. They ran a consistent race, probably very close to the time they trained for and expected the course to take. I don't think anyone thought the time would be so fast. They certainly raced with the lead more than Kipchopchoge did!
I'm from Utah. This is how Mormon athletes tend to behave. They hog spotlight to get attention as representatives of their religion. I have literally had conversations with other world-class Utah Mormon runners in which they've stated that the biggest factor in their athletics career is to be a representative for their religion. Regardless, it's extraordinarily distasteful to stand 3 feet from the center of the finish line as others are finishing. I'm pretty they'd all rather get their first chat with their coach or family, not some random 8th or 9th place finisher.

First of all, in what world is it distasteful to congradulate your competitiors and cheer them to the line? We need more of it, not less.
Second of all, if you actually live in Utah and actually are around the faith, you'll know that they need all the ambassadors they can get. It's rare to be more than 3 messages deep onto one of the Mantz or Rooks or Corrigan or Eyestone posts on this site before someone makes fun of the religion or lifestyle. The more ambassadors they have, the better

Dude, go outside and touch grass.
I doubt the people whom they greeted with a high five are at all offended or annoyed.
Major props to these guys for a super ballsy and impressive performance on a really tough-seeming course on a hot day.
Now these guys need to have lucky day and win Boston or New York...
There’s about 50 Kenyans that would have beaten them if allowed in the race. Top 10 at the Olympics is not that impressive.
You don't say. How interesting then that the 2 Yanks only finished behind ONE Kenyan, and Mantz was only 1:12 behind that one for Bronze on a very tough course.
embarrassing seeing americans gloat over top 10 finishes in marathons. the rest of the world doesn't care!
I don't see any floating going on here; perhaps you're projecting? It's an American website with Americans congratulating a couple of their own for solid top 10s in the Olympics. Doesn't seem that out of line to me really...
