"Everything is different now" - That would have been the easier thing to say. What he is saying is "get ready to open the check book Paul (Moser) and don't even bother double checking that with John" (Capriotti - who still really makes all the decisions there).
But I agree with you it's unwise - I wouldn't be playing hardball with Nike on $$$ - you're going to get a lot - just rub their noses in it because the moment things don't go your way (and this doesn't last forever) they will f--k you in a heartbeat if you have that type of attitude.
And either way, it does seem a bit odd that a guy who allowed "God to carry him to the finish line" - I thought people like that weren't motivated by $$$? :D

It is like the Ninja Turtles 3 movie when they go back in time to Japan. At first the deal between the bad guy and the emperor was cannons for silver. But then the ninja turtles came along and the price changed to cannons for gold.
Realistically if you were Nike (or any other company) how much more is he worth today? Not much. You really think any distance guy is really helping sell stuff? Pro running is corporate charity for established companies.
Maybe Nike short changed him in the prior negotiation.

What he's saying is that no one, absolutely no one, in the history of the Olympics has done what he's done. Nobody’s done it better. It's truly unprecedented. No one's ever seen anything like it before. So he's gonna build a nest. And Nike's gonna pay for it.

If it's aimed at shoe companies, I hope he doesn't get too aggressive in negotiations. With the best will in the world, he's not the most marketable athlete out there.
