Beatrice Chebet closed yesterday's 5000 with a 2:33 last k. Nadia Battocletti, a women who might not even be able to break 2:00 at the 800, managed 2:36 and even Sifan Hassan of marathon training did 2:34 high.
Considering the women's 1000 meters world record is 2:28.98, the men's 1000 meters world record is 2:11.96 and yesterday's winning time was 14:28.56, this basically would be like the men closing a 5000 in the low 13's with a ~2:16-18 last k. I however don't remember a single race with such splits. Maybe much slower 5000's were closed in sub 2:20 before, but definitely not races that fast.
Any explanations for this phenomenon?
