I mean, great race for him and all. National record. He should be pleased. But have we gotten to the “participation trophy” point where everyone gets a flag and a victory lap if they want. Have we forgotten what “victory” lap actually means?

On one hand, he had a great race and doing so in front of a home crowd at the Olympics is likely a lifetime high. Can understand wanting to soak that in.
On the other hand it does take attention away from those that actually medaled, so can see an argument for it not being fair.
Where I net out is that he doesn’t “owe” them something in terms of celebrating and is welcome to soak it in
Carrying the flag was what pushed it over the edge for me. Celebrate all you want, but recognize that you finished 10 spots out of the medals. Let the medalists have their moment.

National record. Sub 13 minutes. It was a victory
Every one is a winner, medals all around! Get out of here with that crap.

There were a lot of runners celebrating who broke 27.
He ran fast enough to win every other Olympic 10,000 and took 13th.
It was also the last event of the day so plenty of time to celebrate on the track at the end of what was an amazing race. The whole field should have took a bow after that show they put on

I was there. It was in an incredible scene. The French love their athletics and they wanted him to celebrate. It was a big F’ing deal and they love their country. I got major respect for France after this trip.

100%. It was a really cool atmosphere and the fans were loving it. This was a once-in-a-lifetime moment for the guy and he ran an incredible race. Let him enjoy it.
To all the regular observers, he’s the “13th best runner in the world” he just broke a national record at a home olympics
you take a damn lap for the fans when that happens
imagine if the American record was still Nenow’s AR till today and someone broke it at the Olympics, that would be pretty special
Did anyone else notice they broke out a second Ethiopian flag for one of the others who didn’t medal? That’s hilarious. They assumed at least two of their runners would hit the podium. Wah wah wah.

Selemon Barega was celebrating Ethiopia's silver medal. They raced together and celebrated together. Love it!

It would be pretty special and I can understand Gressier being really happy with his time. But I'm of the opinion that the emphasis on times rather than placing and competition is not a good thing for the sport and having a victory lap when you haven't even medaled seems a real manifestation of that. On top of that, it was a race run in super shoes on a track that was designed to be the fastest one ever so I don't know if was qualitatively a better performance than the previous record. But who knows? If I'd just set a national record I might have taken a victory lap even if I'd finished last and been lapped.

I’m assuming you are American like myself. It’s refreshing to see the way France approaches the games an athletics in particular. In the UsA it’s all or nothing. In France, they knew they were not going to medal but setting a NR in from of 80k screaming fans was special. It’s all perspective and France has a healthy outlook on sport and life. I’m impressed. Also, can I add that that Paris is clean, safe, cops don’t f around and no homeless. I think we have a lot to learn from these Olympics
