On Instagram she says she doesn’t care about medals, just the journey. I’m not sure what to think. On the one hand, she’s is tough as nails, on the other, it’s a cop out. I wish she just would put all her chips on the table in the marathon. That’s the race she could win. She can battle Obiri like Kipchoge will battle Bekele. The legends square off….

I wonder if her thinking is to mainly focus on the 5K and 10K. And then since the marathon is at the end, just see what happens.

Yeah, that struck me as interesting. I wonder what all of her sponsors think about "Just about the journey". Plus, that's usually foreshadowing into 0 medals in any event from Hassan.

Even if she doesn’t medal in any of the three events, Hassan still deserves massive props for even having the willingness and guts to try and even complete this triple, medals earned or not. There’s a reason this triple is almost never attempted, it’s so hard and unforgiving on your body especially with the marathon being the last event. It’s an absolute torture fest, and the fact that she’s willing to go all in on it even at the risk of sacrificing her own chances for an Olympic medal is extraordinary.

No, the goal is to win medals, and if she doesn’t, the decision to triple will be a poor one.

Doing this she gets more press and attention than any other of her competitors.

Has anyone in the modern era ('80s-onward) ever competed in the 5k, 10k, and marathon?
I only know of Emil Zatopek but that was in the '50s.

Viren '76 got fifth or sixth after gold in the 5 and 10, and it was his first marathon.

Hassan is one of a kind; however, she has been and still is putting her body thru too much. Every Championship since her first attempt at a triple and she is getting worse in the following championship. Wouldn't surprise me if she doesn't grab but one medal in Paris, that's what history's trend points to just one medal.

How is she going to race an elite level marathon 48 hours after 10000m ?

Only gets props if she finishes the marathon, even in tenth.

Might have a shot at a bronz or two.. who knows if she picks up three bronze medals that would be pretty amazing. Or she could scratch the marathon after disappointing results on the track...

People on LetsRun underestimating Hassan as usual. People saying she won’t medal blah blah blah. This is the woman who got three medals in Paris, won the London marathon on her Debut and then a few months later got two medals in Budapest (should’ve been another three had she not fall) and then a few months later won the Chicago marathon by running the second fastest time in history. This is the Olympic Games, not the diamond league or marathon majors. No one is going to want to make it fast, the Ethiopians have shown over and over again that they don’t like doing that at major championships and the Kenyans are not known to take it out as well. If she can stick with them through the latter stages of all three races, I think that she still has a world class finish and will definitely push herself. I don’t think she’ll win gold in any event but she has a high chance of medaling in all three. I’ll certainly be rooting for her. She already has two Olympic golds, she has fulfilled her dream. She’s now doing things to challenge herself and keep herself motivated. I applaud her for her ambition.

This seems doable to me if she is tapered and peaked. The 5k heat will just be a tempo, and anyone remotely conditioned can recover from a 5k in 4 days, so she will be fresh for the 10k. Her chances in the marathon then depend on how much of a jogfest the 10k is. Hot weather favors her here in the 10k and marathon

If only it was 48 hours - the 10,000 final is at 9 PM on the Friday local time, so done at about 9.30. The marathon starts at 8AM on Sunday. So it's less than 35 hours in between the two.

I think she'll end up with zero medals in the end and wished she would do the 5k + marathon only.
