For a man, being 6 feet tall is a requirement for nearly everything important.

You forgot perhaps the greatest sprinter - Bob Hayes (listed at 5' 11" but really 5' 10"). He would have easily run faster than 9.58 if on today's tracks with today's shoes. Olympic Gold 100m Tokyo 1964.

there are more white guys than man under 6ft among the olympic champions in the last 50 years... it goes to show how rare it is for a short guy to win.

The plethora of great sub-6 ft sprinters listed already shows that it's nothing more than a fluke. Those guys have plenty of world records, world championship victories, and American or Jamaican titles.

I don't know that there's any reason to believe he could have done it "easily."

Sometimes statistics are not particularly meaningful statistically. That's only 12 Olympics (12 x 4 = 48 years), of which nearly half (5 of 12) were won by Carl Louis and Usain Bolt. WAY too small a sample to make a a statistically valid judgment. That said, average height for a male in the U.S. is around 5'8" - 5'9", and athletes tend to be a little larger than the average male, so 6 ft really isn't that tall. Bolt is perhaps more of an outlier in that typically VERY tall sprinters (he is 6' 5") don't do as well at 100 meters, as it take them so long to get started. It's always amazing to me that Grant Holloway is such a great starter given his height.

Jim Hines, the first runner to go below 10-flat (at altitude, at Mexico '68) was 5'11". I think Don Quarrie was well under 6' as well.
