Is Drew Hunter a dark horse for qualifying for the US olympic team?

Love the man, but....

Time machine multiverse Drew? yes.

Regular old Drew? no. same long odds as everyone else hoping some bizarre trip/boxed combination makes it a 6 wide blanket finish and they steal the 3rd spot.

That being said, the universe does owe him something for the US team that was taken away from him.

No. hasn’t shown the finishing speed to place high enough. there are plenty of guys well under 13:08 now too

Don't forget Nico and Grant also have 3:34 PRs. FWIW, Drew is one of 4 (Fisher, Kincaid, McGorty) in this field to have qualified for a 5k team before (I might be forgetting someone though). He's been on a solid upswing the last 2 years, but he might need a couple more under his belt before he's got a good shot. I'd still put Wolfe, Hocker, and Nuguse above him (if they run). If Nico, Hocker, and Nuguse all don't run, his chances go up considerably, although a really good race would probably still be 5th-6th for him.

I'd be absolutely pumped for him to make it. I was watching TME right around the time he qualified for Worlds in the 5k. It would be amazing to see him make another team when the US is so stacked now.

the 5k team will be unbeleivably hard to make. The hardest in US history. Its amazing no one has mentioned nur yet.

Assuming Fisher is the only lock, that means Drew would have to beat at least 6 of the following: Kincaid, Teare, McGorty, Young, Hacker, Blanks, Dylan Jacobs. That just doesn't seem possible as Kincaid, Teare, McGorty, Young, Hacker, Blanks have all demonstrated they are a class above him.

Bottom line: Drew has about as big of a shot at the 5k team as Johnny Gregorek has at the 1500. I would be impressed if Drew was top 7 at the 5k trials.

I realized i also forgot to mention NUR in all of that. He probably about as good as teare.

In my original post I was mostly referring to 10k team, as that is more wide open. I agree that 5k team is probably unreachable with the depth of talent there. Again, Drew would have to hope to get in thru ranking.

Does getting 3rd place in the 10,000m in a time around 27:20 get enough quota points to even remotely get in on rankings?

Drew isn't even entered in the 10k. Probably because he is so far away from the Olympic standard that even a top 3 finish does him no good.

Drew's only chance is the 10k thats won in 28:30 with a fast last 1k. And i dont even think hes doing the 10. Im glad he was smart out of hs and set himself up for life likely. But hes not making any olympic teams :/ and im not even speaking from the perspective of someone that doesnt want to see him on the team

On his strava run yesterday he said he's running 5k and 10k

Kinda confused why he’d run the 10k at the trials. He doesn’t have the standard and they won’t go for it at the trials, he doesn’t have a world ranking, and he’s never shown a kick good enough to beat any of the main players if he’s just looking for a championship.

I know there’s 6 days between the 10k and 5k prelims so it’s whatever but it seems like the 10k can only serve to make him less likely to perform well in the 5k.
