And only one made the steeple. How does such a good academic school do so poorly? Stanford is obviously slightly higher ranked yet they run MUCH better
I think it comes down to how much emphasis the school places on athletics versus academics. Duke is known for its rigorous academic programs, and sometimes that might mean less flexibility or support for student-athletes. Stanford has a long history of balancing both academics and athletics at a high level. They probably have better facilities and resources dedicated to training. I went to a school similar to Duke, and I saw firsthand how tough it was for athletes to balance everything. The focus on academics can sometimes overshadow sports performance.
DURHAM – Forty-seven members of the Duke track and field team garnered All-ACC Academic Team honors for their respective performances in the classroom, as the conference
Outdoors: Women's ACC champs without Maatoug's points
Distance: Without Maatoug, they need some good recruits to be relevant. Rolly has a lot of potential, but had some knee problems this year and sat out. If Duke gets this part of the puzzle solved, they could be a dangerous team.
I remember a few years ago I got to know a girl that ran for duke while we worked at their summer camp. She had just graduated and was transferring to a mid-major state school for grad school. I asked her about running for duke and how she felt about running her last year at the new school.
ill never forget she said: I’m excited to see what I can do when I can actually focus on the sport. She was apparently a good high school runner and had a decent career at duke but hadn’t leveled up like she thought she would.
note: at the state school she did improve a decent amount but nothing crazy. Still overall a better runner there so definitely was some possible truth to it but could also have been better training or just stacking from her duke fitness/natural progression
They probably have less than 2 scholarships for their entire men's distance team, maybe less. The new director Wilbourn has set out to take all scholarships from distance to put into throwers and decathletes.
Give me a break. Duke underperforms in xc/track because of bad coaching and culture. They get really good recruits, and athletes can find easy classes just like everywhere else. You think the basketball players are suffering through tough academic schedules?
Duke has e worst coz hong for distance. Coach Angela Reckart was terrible and their associate Adam Cooke is just as bad if not worse. The distance is a complete mess now
Agreed , Duke needs to start over and get rid of the bad coaching and start completely over. Adam is not liked for many reasons. He’s a weasel and not good to have around. His coaching is god awful too
The blame is on Wilbourn. He hired everyone, deliberately hiring mediocre distance coaches so they won't complain about not getting any scholarship money.
Wilbourn fired Reckart mid-season, which clearly ruined their year. Even if she's not great, she would have done a better job than the underqualified assistant. Just fire her at year end like every other director does.

Wilburn is bad yes. I will say the stories I heard recently about Adams Cooke make me believe he’s gone too.
Duke alum can only pray they get a good coach or coaches for once
