Man, I deleted all of my social media accounts in 2018 (except LinkedIn) and my life improved tremendously. Not kidding. Just get off of that stuff, especially if you are an older guy. Social media is awful, except LRC which is full of very intelligent and well-balanced individuals.

How so? There's a lot of teammates from college, coaches from college and high school, and teammates from college and high school, and other runners and friends that the only way I can stay in contact is Facebook. If it wasn't for Facebook they would have no idea what I'm doing. They live all over the United States and the world. But I'm just tired of everyone knowing what I'm doing.

No one under the age of 42 uses Facebook.

I may delete mine and see how that affects mine. I think the dopamine thing is real. I have to turn off my news feed to avoid the comparison/envy trap. It's a real thing, seriously.

I'll get 5-10 likes on a post (and I don't post too often!) and people will get 100 without trying. I think the algorithm really does screw some and help others. Most advice I've seen about boosting engagement is only for business pages as well.

I see what you mean about staying in touch, but are you REALLY staying in touch? I do keep up with college friends and teammates but through text (and a fewer number of them). If you value a relationship with someone, you'll keep it going. Facebook is not a relationship. I promise you it isn't.

I deactivated mine beginning of last year and haven't felt a need to go back. Still use Instagram regularly, that's enough for me. Facebook felt like a waste of time, almost all of the posts I would see or interactions I had were acquaintances or friends of friends etc, not people I actually care much about.

I like keeping up with my friends. If you get jealous of other people's vacation pictures, or photos of their kids accomplishments, that's a you problem. I don't get it.

As far as the politics, I do block people that only post about that stuff, but again, just like a real life social scenario, you just avoid the negative loud mouths, and engage with the positive. It really is that easy.

I did this at the end of 2019 and it was great. I started an instagram in 2021 and only have like 50 followers which is the way to go. It's nice to not have so many people knowing your business. I post a picture like once or twice a year. I like keeping a low profile but not a completely non-existent one.

Got rid of Facebook, Instagram and Reddit last year. I can't say that my life "improved" but I just deemed them completely unnecessary for someone my age (+40). Nobody really cares what I'm up to and those that do can easily find my phone number and email address online if they care that much.

I post here a couple times per year. It's just an old school message board.

I would get rid of LinkedIn but I think it's good to have if you are 9 to 5/corporate type who might need to change jobs, network, etc.

I also have an AOL email address that I've had since 1998. What's wrong with AOL? It functions the same as any other email platform. Is email supposed to be something special? It's not my primary email address, but where my close family members can contact me.

OK I take that back. My life improved after getting rid of Reddit. Reddit might be more toxic than any other social media platform. 90% of Reddit is unemployed, overweight, neckbeards who love video games and Marvel and would be quick to protest anything if they could actually get up from the couch. I never had Twitter, so I can't compare.

I haven’t been on any of the major social media platforms for several years. It’s easier to love my family without reading their posts complaining about vaccines or Joe Biden or whatever it is that is upsetting them at any given moment throughout the day.

Reddit is ok at times but their subs are VERY strict, especially their running ones. I had a race report removed because it wasn't detailed enough, even though it followed TOS otherwise and was well-written.

I get your post but the algorithm favors those images and it makes others struggle with comparison and other issues by design.

I haven't signed on since they cancelled Trump. All I miss is the neighborhood group that tells me where I can find a screen repair guy (for example) but I'm coping fine.

I did that 5 years ago. I am missing out on some information from my running group. Other than that I am missing that not one bit.

Social media is such a time waster and adds so much anxiety to everything.

The Cambridge Analytica scandal was the final thing that made me delete my account.
